I have a ugly helm one of my first. It has never been worn in combat. No one wanted this ugly piece of crap. It is 14ga. and 16ga.

If my memory serves. They had two riveted loops inside. The top one pointed to the coif the lower one pointed to the chain maille shoulder. I would like to print my design on iron on cloth and glue it to the leather is that very unperiod?

Wow! Thems some good looking pounding stuff!

The local junk store has some foot looking pedestal things cast iron or steel. I did not think one could use that for armouring.

Now that you made me think about it. They would be great for sewing turn shoes on.

14 ga. = .075" or there abouts. 16 ga. is about .062, 18 ga. is about .040. The dimensions in are inches. Always use one more gage than you need for dishing.

If you want that mirror finish and are willing to spend the time. After the finest belt sanding is done wet hand sand with 400 emery cloth then go to 600. I agree with Pathfinder. Also after it is formed and bolted temp. you can see how the breaths will look on your helm. This gives you a little design freedom.
I like to clamp a wood 2 X 4 sticking out from the work bench to drill on.
