Wife would not let me touch her oven, but had good luck with the weed burner. It is a little tricky keeping it even and you must stop just before the color you want. As for leather yes.
This helm has leather panels.

This one is made in 3 pieces and just epoxied on.

Bend over the edges of a strip and cut 4 V notches.
Hammer into the U shape and weld up the slots then grind smooth.
Fit the two side pieces and glue.
