Re: Giving back/making tooling
I just ordered some extra small end mills. I'll see what kind of detail I can get with my setup.

Re: Giving back/making tooling
Thanks Sean.
Makers marks are a good idea. About 1/2" is common yes? I'll see what I can come up with.
As for anvil resurfacing I think a gantry mill might work best since light passes should be all that's needed.
Nate.

Giving back/making tooling
Hey all. I haven't been armouring in quite a while and ended up selling most of my tools locally, but I want to give back to the community. I've recently started CNC machining with my benchtop mill and was thinking of making and selling some tooling. What forms would people be interested in? I was t...

Re: 4130 welding and heat treatment
I was more looking for what filler material provides good results when hardening the piece. Annealing prior to hardening of course. Is 4130 rod best or should I go with a ER80S2 or ER70S2 rod like is used for roll cages and the like?

4130 welding and heat treatment
I'm looking at making a helm out of 4130 and heat treating/hardening it when complete. For SCA fighting. The pattern I want to use is a welded construction for the skull. Is this possible and if so what TIG filler material do you recommend? Any tips?

Re: Mig welder issues.... HELP!!!
Typically wire cutters or dikes are meant for solid and stranded wire for electrical use. The cutting face is more blunt and will pinch before it cuts through. A decent pair of welders pliers should cut without pinching or you can file the end of the wire before feeding it through. If you have a fin...

Re: Mig welder issues.... HELP!!!
It sounds like the wire may be getting crimped when cutting it. Causing the wire end to be out of round and catch in the gun. This seems to happen often with flux core wire.

Re: Tool idea?
Here is the quick sketch I made while doodling tool ideas at work... It would be double ended. Small raising stake on one end and the other end would have the gouge in the top and edges ground down so it wont damage the piece being worked. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8366/8481468260_4dde4c0667.jpg

Re: Format of Armour Patterns
I would try putting in a single non-cutting point for each rivet hole as a center point referance while scaling. Once scaled to where you want, center the river holes over the points. More work in the CAD program but should make it easier to scale.

Re: Tool idea?
Wow. This is really close to an idea I've been toying with, though I didn't think of adding a gusset. Good idea. I'm sorry to see it fall through for you. My idea was more double sided 1.5" to 2" round kind of like a small raising stake. It would be rounded on one side for raising and have a divot g...

Re: looking for a cheap anvil
Most anvils I've seen go for around $1-2 per lb so that price seems pretty reasonable to me and depending on where you live I'd expect a bit of a road trip to pick up anything of reasonable size. If you miss this one and are not in a huge rush I'd check out some local blacksmithing/ABANA swapmeet. T...

Re: help IDing a torch?
From what I could find AGF Burner Inc has or used to have a site in Elizabeth NJ. I'm guessing that is where this particular burner was made using their 1N tip. The 1N tip is designed for use with natural, bottled, and slow burning or reformed gas. Thats the best I could find. Page 8 of their burner...

I'm sure you're right though like I said it's just been stories. I've never seen this first hand. What I heard was from Atenveldt where I used to play before I moved and I believe it was misdiagnosed heat stroke. I personally don't play with galvy steel mainly due to looks. I'm sorry if I caused any...

Re: Galvanized Maille
I'd suggest stripping the zinc off once you get everything put together. I've heard stories of people sweating the zinc off in desert heat and it seeping into their poors and making them sick. It would start with you getting dizzy and a bit sick before a wicked headache sets in. Just my $.02.

Re: Needle preference for sewing leather
A heavy stitching awl and some upholstery needles work well for me. I personally like using curved needles for the thread after I've punched a hole with the awl. Artificial sinew or waxed twine are my preference.

I believe 5160 is commonly used in power hammer tooling. If you have it heat treated it should last through many attempts at "armour repair". PB do you have a photo of your creasing stake? I want to make sure were talking about the same thing/shape. I have two or three different versions I'm conside...

PB & Wade. Thanks for the feedback. I figured I would get mixed responces. For the moment I'm leaning tward softer material or carbon steel for more blunt tools like soft edged creasing/fluting stakes and harder material for tools with sharper edges like cutoff or edge rolling tools. What do you thi...

Hello All. I'm currently in the design and prototyping stage of some armoring tool designs and want to guage interest in tooling material. No. I order the rough balls and they are shipped to me. I get the 1" post from my local steel supplier. I'm trying to figure out pricing and the quantity I should order. I'm also looking into half sizes down to 1" but I would have to order anything 2" and smaller in bulk to keep the price reasonable...
