Ball stakes. 2.5" 3" and 3.5"

I made a set of these for myself and am considering making more and selling them. Would anyone be interested and what do you think would be a fair price. http://flic.kr/p/dyDCEX They are forged not cast, hardened 1080 high carbon steel that is mig welded on a 1" x 12" solid steel post. The photo sho...

Re: Your balls are showing!

Lol yeah I gotta figure out how to add location. I'm in Salinas Ca. USA. I havent had much luck with scrap yards in this area. I have a local steel supplier that has good prices but I don't think they do forged balls. The ball stakes I made this weekend are from 1080 high carbon steel with a 58-63 R...

Re: Your balls are showing!

Thanks PB. I was afraid someone was going to say that. I am planning on making a large T stake out of 3" square bar and radius the ends but was hoping to get away with the 3.5" ball for now. Do you know where I could find a larger ball if I decide to get one as well? I tried a shot put but it was ca...

Re: Your balls are showing!

I just made these this weekend and still need to sand smooth and polish. I need some advice though. The balls are 2.5, 3, and 3.5 inch dia. respectively. I plan on raising helms and elbows/knees. Should I get anything bigger or should I be fine with these for now? It's been a pain to find ones any l...

Re: how to cut thick leather?

I use carpet hook blades for the thick stuff. Cuts through 12oz latigo hide like butter.

Close helm work in progress

Hello all. I have started my first helm for SCA heavy combat. Because I am stubborn and like a chalenge I have decided to start with a close helm. To those who suggested that I should start with an easier pattern you can go ahead and get your "I told ya so" out now. :D Anywho I have dished both halv...

Re: Demi gauntlets

Ahh. I see your point about the cuff. I just compaired it to a full gauntlet I forgot I had and I see that Its too big. I'm going to try making a new demi pattern based on the old rusty full gauntlet. Also do you think 20g stainless is heavy enough for SCA combat or should I use something thicker li...

Re: Demi gauntlets

One thing I plan on changing is the metacarpal plate. I need to make it just a hair wider and put a bit more curve to the thumb. It was my first attempt at a pattern with some free scrap I had laying around. I thought the cuff came out a bit large but I wanted to make sure it would fit over my thick...

Demi gauntlets

I just finished these demi's that I was working on last week. I made them from 20g stainless. I used a single rivet to connect the middle articulation plate to the wrist but the rivet I used is too long so I need to cut and shorten it. I'm planning on changing the design just a little and make the a...

Re: WTB 7-10oz vegtan leather

I recently got a 10-12oz black latigo side from here http://www.theleatherguy.org/ to make some splinted legs among other things. The leather is very nice and even thickness.

Re: Left over stock from Pennsic

With a metal pommel I would hope heavy. I wouldn't want to get dinged with the wrong end of that.

I'm very tempted by the kidney belt. Must check budget. Don't want to get in trouble with my lady.

Re: Splinted leg advice

Thanks Konstantin. I'll keep that in mind. I haven't done much research as of yet. I'm mainly focused on getting back on the field. After I get authorized again and as I get better at armouring I will be making a new suit later down the line that is closer to my time frame. I am waiting for the leat...

Re: Splinted leg advice

Thanks a ton. I have some 20g stainless that I was going to use for some demi gauntlets and wasn't sure if it would be thick enough for splints without getting wicked bends any time its hit. I was thinking of doing 2" splints dished in a groove. My persona is early 16th C. Scottish. I'm not too worr...

Splinted leg advice

Hello all. I'm just getting back into the SCA and starting to fight again. It seems my old armour doesn't fit since I'm not 18 anymore. I've been entertaining the idea of going to splinted leather and I've been wondering what weight leather and gauge of metal to use. I was thinking of using 10-12oz ...

Re: bending metal

I will be using the pipe rig to make the main bend but still be using the hammer for the final finishing/fluting/dishing of things.

I've taken a small cross pein mini sledge and rounded and polished the faces one side is my dishing hammer and the other is a round polished edge.

Thanks for all the great advise.

Re: bending metal

I never thought about using two pipes like that. I'll have to give it a try. My first attempt was using my polished cross pein hammer and anvil. It got the shape about right but its a bit lumpier than I would like. I'll have to try the pipe idea. I'm just practicing with some aluminum but plan on us...

bending metal

Hello, I'm just getting back into the SCA and learning to make armour and I've got a question. What method do armourers use to put an even bend in metal. I'm making myself some new legs since my old ones don't fit anymore and I can't find an easy way to put a smooth curve in the metal. I'm practicin...
