Re: Does this count as calling it light?

One guys "touch" maybe someones else's "firm hit". The next guy wants a "firm hit" but gets what he thinks is a "Hard shot." Unless someone quantifies it, terms don't help a whole lot across regions or Kingdoms. What we have is local convention, as defined by ...

Re: Future of SCA fighting

OK, forgive me - big rant warning. All in all, Samurai, Early period, Late Period, Norse, French, lots of armor, little armor, spear, sword, shields, maces, etc. etc. etc... One question - ARE YOU HAVING FUN? Want to know what might drive new people away? Showing up at events or practices, or maybe ...

Well, at least THAT is something we're doing that's historically accurate...

Re: War boards

Actually the "war board" I use is closer inproportion to what my portrayal would have carrried than the one I use in tourney. But there are instances of different shields being used (especially when the Irish were raiding across the Irish sea into Wales).

Depends on your job in the unit. As I've moved to different jobs and roles in the unit I fight with, my shield size has changed.

Re: A Question of Grace

I'm trying to switch to the "two wounds = kill" when it won't horribly disrupt the tourney (i.e. Candlemas). I leave it to my opponent - if he is OK with having to wound me twice instead of me fighting from my knees, great. If he would rather I didn't, I'm OK with that. As far as my oppone...

It's a part of our culture. We're out there to do honor for our inspiration, right? Even the guy who is the "Bye fighter" is being watched, and judged by the gallery. I mean you can yield on a bye fight, but not much renown in that.... "The King's Champion came out to challenge Lord J...

Re: "Bye" Fights

If you have an odd number of fighters in a tourney, make two picked at random "Fight in" - seperate bout, winner is in the tourney, loser is out.

Personally, if there are six rounds, I would like six fights, thankyouverymuch.

Re: Future of SCA fighting

Future of SCA fighting? It'll happen. New people will show up, some will stick with it. Some will get really good at whatever they do - Armored combat, fencing, archery, dance, drinking. Some will help the next wave of new folks. There will be "generi-celts", 14th c mafia, combat archers, ...

I made $5.25 an hour working at a sandwich shop and had no car when I was prince at age 20. That only slightly improved when I started making $7.00 ph digging ditches during my reign. Still had no car. Didn't need meds. I've never had a gym membership. You eat food anyway. You have armor anyway. Yo...

I estimate that it takes about 400-500 practices to be a Knight level fighter.

QUALITY practices. Just showing up doesn't do it.

Re: What does it take to compete at the top levels of SCA He

Practice at practice. Seek out the best opponents you can. Seek out a variety of opponents - different styles, mindsets, etc. Work out FOR the activity - Bulking up like an offensive lineman isn't necessarily going to help your fighting. Work on your weaknesses more than your strengths And above all...

If you are going to mandate one aspect to make it dummy proof, why stop there? We've seen similar arguement on nearly ever weapon type, helms, shields, etc. If we really want to "Dummy proof" the SCA rules, then the simplest thing to do is make everyone use the same thing, right? (Yes, I'm...

Since your arguement was to make it "dummy proof", then make all rules dummy proof. If a fighter can't be expected to be smart enough to make a safe weapon unless it adheres to one set of parameters, then defining more parameters makes the game safer, right? Helps with those marshales who ...

Right and the best way to fix that? Use round stock. End of problem...even for the dummies. Total standardization. S...

A properly made planed-down rattan sword is no more or less dangerous than a properly made non-planed rattan sword. Unless the person using it is being unsafe.
