Re: Legal fist weapons?

At least around the Midrealm, the marshallate and fighters are both pretty reasonable about such things. And I've seen 3 injuries caused by guys fighting in spurs. All involved sharp spurs, a leg blow, and the fighter in question dropping to their knees FAST, and sitting on their heels - for a secon...

Re: Bradshaw Feeling Effects of Concussions

Every fighter is different. The 6 foot tall, 200 pound athletic guy witht he 19 in neck is not going to be affected by the same shot as the 5'2", 110 pound fighters with the 13 inch neck.

One reason we don't hit as hard as we are really capable, and we shouldn't need to.

yah i used "padded" to mean "covered". but i have to ask, so rounding a piece of plywood makes it less likely to damage rattan than leaving the factory edge on it? really? it doesnt of course but its odd that we would have a rule like this and not one against some of these helms...

Shield edged don't have to be padded. They only need to be "made as to not be overly damaging to weapons", IIRC.

Hence Vitus' all wood and resin shields pass.

Re: Aventail WITHOUT a gorget ? is it legal?

They happened about 30 mins apart in different areas of the woods battle. The first wasn't bad - everything did it's job, so it was more a "whoo!" reaction than anything. The other was the ultimate bad mojo moment - Opponent stepped forward to reach me, I stepped forward to reach him, and ...

Re: Aventail WITHOUT a gorget ? is it legal?

Been stabbed in the throat twice in one battle. Second one was the freak shot that put me on the ground - There are a few places that are always in the "line of fire" in every fight that you don't want to test their durability. IMO, the larnyx is one such spot.

Besides, to my mind it goes against the spirit of armed chivalric combat as seen through Victorian or Arthurian Legend colored glasses. This. Besides, what would the desired effect of punching an armored opponent be? You won't hurt him, unless you get very lucky, or hit someone in the cup (Oh, the ...

Wasn't my intent, I assure you. Just that it can and has been done. I agree with his Grace on prepping. I tried to do my first fund raiser "cold" and paid for it. I made sure my endurance was better for the other two, and made sure to take deep, controlled breaths between bouts. Hydration ...

Re: Is it Possible to Fight 60 Rounds in a Single Day?

I've done over 150 fights in under 5 hours on 3 occasions.

158 in 3 hours, 35 minutes, 220 in 4 hours, 256 in 4 hours, 38 minutes.

All as fundraisers. Opponents came at me one after another, bearpit style, as I held the field.

Re: Aggression on the field.

There is a difference between and agressive tactic, style and mindset. You don't have to have all three.

If I'm fighting my fight, I am choosing when, where and how the agression takes place. Sometimes that means not being very agressive.

I go into any battle with at least 2, sometimes 3 weapons. Javelin/short spear, sword, cudgel (mace) or dagger. Ran into a guy in the woods battle at Pennsic 34 or 35 who tried to cheese this rule. Had a long "dagger" strapped to each thigh, like a gunslinger rig or something. We were both fighting spear, and when the lines pressed I whacked him in the leg with my back up mace. He yelled "Nope,...

Could be all of the above. Over-gripping would be my choice to start with, especially if you are hitting the pell full power. Loosen up the grip, pad the pell or don't hit it full power.

We used to have all kinds of "oddity" battles, now about the only one is at Red Dragon, which is the Dragon Hunt. 7 Knights, tied together - 4 single sword, 1 spear, 1 2 weapon, one 2 shields. Kill the Knight with 2 shields (the heart) to win. The hunters are 2 single sword fighters and 1 ...

Leg shot.
Offside Head.
Onside head
Slot shot / hammer shot
Thrust to the body
Thrust to the face

Basic shots I practice every chance I can, and make up about 90% of the blows I use with sword and shield, tourney or melee.

Everything else is just flash.

This has always been my approach to it. I go so far as to tell new fighters -
