I personally don't find any references of "naked fighitng men" that late in Ireland, or any tribe of the Celtic influance that late. That includes the Picts.

SHIRTLESS, yeah (not among the Irish). In a leine with no PANTS, yep! But not naked.

It's not a tournament I see myself going to anytime soon (distance), but I always thought that certain "theme" or "specialty" tournies are fun - like the round shield and axe. We have them here in my neck of the woods - though they tend to be their own "stand alone" tou...

Rowan - Oh, I agree - though this is much more likely in some portrayals than others. IMO one very real fact of the 14thc person is the uniformity of the armor. Same for the spangen helm and mail crowd - Only so many ways to set oneself apart. But the ways DO exist. Heraldry, garb, shields, and yeah...

After looking into it, Irish folks just did not wear armor other than waxed linen or leather coats until after the 9th century AD. At least not in any of the book of durrow or book of kells mentionings or anywhere I could find. Not entirely accurate. Heck, even the Cattle Raid of Cooley mentions ar...

I make a "collar" around the rattan to make a 2" base for the tip itself. The collar is only about a 1/2" wide, so it isn't adding much weight to the end of the weapon. Seat the tip on this, then complete like a sword. To improve durability, you can cover the whole tip in a leath...

The right person with the right weapon is always more effective. Doesn't matter if it is with a mace, sword, spear or spork..... Maces and hammers have an advantage in SCA combat that hits to the shoulder and hips are a kill. Plus in the press of the shield wall, the shorter length can make them mor...

You haven't run into the right guy with a mace.... Maces (and hammers) CAN be effective as single hand weapons, when properly made and skillfully used. Swinging a big roll of foam on the end of a stick like some carinval "ring the bell" prize? Not so much. Maces and hammer had a specific p...

I've just never noticed enough thrown weapons being used to make a difference (even at Pennsic). And most of those are maybe 50/50 to even come close to a target.

Maybe it is a regional thing.

I think a factor in their SCA use might be gauntlets. IIRC, Dagorhir doesn't require them, and SCA does, unless you are using a basket hilt - in which case you can't use a non-basket hilted weapon. So not everyone on the SCA melee field CAN use them. Plus, gauntlets can make thrown weapons a challen...
