Rowan - Oh, I agree - though this is much more likely in some portrayals than others. IMO one very real fact of the 14thc person is the uniformity of the armor. Same for the spangen helm and mail crowd - Only so many ways to set oneself apart. But the ways DO exist. Heraldry, garb, shields, and yeah...

After looking into it, Irish folks just did not wear armor other than waxed linen or leather coats until after the 9th century AD. At least not in any of the book of durrow or book of kells mentionings or anywhere I could find. Not entirely accurate. Heck, even the Cattle Raid of Cooley mentions ar...

The right person with the right weapon is always more effective. Doesn't matter if it is with a mace, sword, spear or spork..... Maces and hammers have an advantage in SCA combat that hits to the shoulder and hips are a kill. Plus in the press of the shield wall, the shorter length can make them mor...

Gavin - THAT'S the beastie. Using these would seriously impact our game, as people adjusted to a weapon that transferred a LOT more force than rattan. A LOT more. Duke Comar check it out seven ways to Sunday - hot and cold weather, on guys in leather legs, full steel - didn't matter. It didn't take ...

A guy from Norway saying center-grip shileds are useless in a shield wall.... As you can tell, there are almost as many opinions as there are fighters. I agree with the opinion of picking a shield that works with your portrayal, and practice with that. There is no superior shiled, only superior figh...

Flex. A straight on thrust, the rattan doesn't flex. And, we don't typically have rules becuase of guys who are in the top 25% of the fighter population - it's for the bottom 25%. As I've said before, I know fighters I would trust to enter a tournament with a running chain saw and do it safely. I al...

I think a factor in their SCA use might be gauntlets. IIRC, Dagorhir doesn't require them, and SCA does, unless you are using a basket hilt - in which case you can't use a non-basket hilted weapon. So not everyone on the SCA melee field CAN use them. Plus, gauntlets can make thrown weapons a challen...

I must be the luckiest guy on the Archive, marshall-wise. In 20 years, the number of times I've had an experience with a Marshall that was so bad that it stuck in my memory is less than 5. As a fighter, I appreciate that the marshall at an event are volunteering their time to get us on the field. I ...

See, I like the thrust and throw, as it is a VERY period weapon for my persona. Every bit as important as a sword. One of the coolest moments this past Pennsic was in the town battle. Sir Finn (I think....I'm ohrrible with names) from the East and I met across the lines, greeted each other as warrio...
