You know, I never thought of it as "fighting to defend my lady's honor", but fighting "in honor of the inspiration that my lady gives me" - even if she is just "my lady" for that tourney. Of course, I've only kept one prize from any tournament I've ever won - a token wh...

Never been forced to fight any style.

I'll fight other forms because they are fun, but I've never been forced to.

Of course, fun is the only reason we should be doing this, right?

On another note... Why get upset and leave after 10 mins and two losses? You only cheat yourself. Did you lose any prize money? Have to give up your armor or something? Did the price of beer go up because you lost? No? It's a game. You are new at the game, so you are going to lose - a lot. Eventuall...

At least here in the Midrealm, the format of the tourney is almost always published in advance, including any weapon stipulations other "house rules" for the event. That way, people who don't want to participate don't have to. Seems easy enough - if you don't want to fight under the rules ...

Avoid saying things like we "kill" each other on "combat". Yes, you know and we know what that means in the SCA game, but the media won't make the distinction. Have the combatants avoid any "colorful" deaths and the like. Avoid SCA-isms (Troll, etc), don't bring up reli...

The Tuchux are a much smaller group, and a lot of their people live close togehter. It gives them a lot more control and consitency in their training, and a better ability to exert "social pressure" on those who consitently / deliberately screw up. The SCA is frankly waaay to large and spr...

OK, I guess I just don't get as tied up (pardon the pun) on such things. Really, it doesn't bother me to add a lanyard - so I don't sweat it. Just becuase I've never lost a sword on the torunament lists, doesn't mean nobody has. Sort of like mandating groin protection - just becuase you haven't been...

Oh - I've use lanyards and triggers in the past, but I really don't notice them having any positive or negative impact on my fighting. They are just - there. Not a big enough deal to bitch about.

So it isn't a big deal if they DID wear it, right?

Sorry, if I misunderstood, but that just seemed picky.

At least locally to me, you mostly see marshals in tabards at either "fancy dress" tournaments, or in bigger melees where some sort of fast identification wouldn't be a bad thing.

Sorry for the derail, but what's the issue with marshals wearing tabards?
Helps the fighters identify them on the field, helps them identify each other, and adds some pagentry to the scene.

Man, seems to me that if you have to hit someone that hard to get them to take a shot, the weapon isn't the problem. The guy taking the shot is. AND you would be encouraging "sticks" instead of weapons that look like weapons (pole axes), right? There is a difference between changing a weap...

Seems that without experimentation, we wouldn't have a lot of the weapons / styles (like face thrust) that we currently have. This way, we can find out if the average fighter can use it safely, and it improves our game. If it seems that the average SCA fighter can use it safely, cool. (I'm part of t...

Speaking of seige engineers... Since seige engins have to be crewed by multiple people - Who gets the peerage? The guy who designed it? (You get plans off the web). The guy who built it? (Not necessarily the one using it) The guy aiming it? Loading it? Built the ammo? All could be considered part of...

We currently do - the order of the Laurel. Unless you are saying that the Lauerl and Pelican are lesser in some way. At some point there might be a 4th peerage (or 5th, or 6th... at some point I imagine that the archers or equestrians will be upset about being "lumped in" with fencers.) Un...

You know, with the leather "mask", it will inevitably pick up some "battle damage" -cuts, scrapes and the like. A fun thing would be to see the "scars" left on over a time.

Which all makes sense -

Why would a chieftain or King allow his finest warriors kill or maim themselves at a festival?

And, today's opponent was often tomorrow's ally, especially in Ireland. Cattle raids were almost as much sport as anything else - and often treated as such!

BINGO! Working on more research into this. TONS of tests of skills in battle arts went on at festivals and celebrations of all types. AND challenges at war camp, training (and early period warriors did train), and challenges before and DURING battles between individuals. And not always to the death!
