Thing to remember is that in most translations, it is "word for word", or as close as they can get. This isn't necessarily a good thing, as many of the word and term used don't mean the same thing from Japanese to English, especially when talking about philosophy, which is much of what Boo...

Boy, this topic has wandered off the chart, huh? Thust tips are legal for the SCA. For those who are so inclined, either by skill set, desire, or persona - leave them off, or on. Unless the SEM gets a real bug in his bonnet about them, I don't see them going away by mandate. But you could always mak...

Wrong kind of slider. The one you refer to (A tube held in the lead hand on a 2 nanded spear) is used to make a spear "faster" - kind of like a pool cue. The one I described would allow someone to change position of the hand guard - since it is a single hand weapon, I doubt you could use t...

Having talked ot a couple of old-guard fighters, I've heard that one reason the lower leg was made illegal as a target was because nearly all fights ended with both fighters on the ground - Fighter A gets legged, throws a "grass-cutter" as he goes down, Fighter B goes down.... Probably got...

LOL. I can understand! I tell people that the time period I portray (5thc Ireland/Arturian Age) requires a certain amount of "speculative archeology". All we have to go on are stories written several hundred years after the fact - usually handed down from oral tradition. It makes you to wo...

OK... By the way, just to re-iterate, I don't use the madu, and fully understand and agree that it wasn't a weapon found in the use of nobility and / or the warrior class. I could cut some slack to the guy who rigs up a SINGLE point spear with a sliding buckler/handguard as an option to a guantlet. ...

But does that mean those of us who are concerned with history, and the use of such in an SCA context should abandon the slow push? I firmly believe in the "Murdoch" effect, aka. show off and others will follow, but at some point, we have to accept the fact that people will abuse rules, an...

Face thrusts are lighter - but according to the conventions of combat, strikes should be lighter than to the body also. But thrusts to the body are not required to be lighter. The only extra "saftey" is really the padded nature of the thust tip. Also, nothing in the SCA rules defines that ...

You are right, when talking about a horn weapon. But if a guy is holding a sword or a short spear one handed, and delivers a thrust? Still cheesy? Or, are we assuming any single handed weapon use only to thrust = madu? In regards to the shield, I understand the financial and safety need for them to ...

You're assuming the olny thrusts are to the face. Body thrusts need to be with a certain amount of power, right? So if a fighter can thrust with enough force to score a body kill, it is less "cheesey"? And if using a weapon that is by design or use taking advantage of the SCA rules (like f...

I think the rule at Pennsic is that a shield HAS to be controlled by a HAND, or it is "armor". Guys used to fight with a spear and a shield guied off one shoulder. Then the rule came into play, and some added a "hand strap"over the lead hand. Not horribly effective. But they wat ...

I case the leather and use a round point stylus, and make a light a mark as I can - usually works well enough if I HAVE to use the grain side.

On the flesh side, I never worried about it, to be honest. I've used ball point, a fine point sharpie, even a charcoal pencil.

At some level, isn't everyone participating the in SCA is taking part in fantasy, every bit as much as the Tuchux, Dagorhir (sp) and the other groups? Your fantasy just isn't meshing with someone else's. So either withdraw from any fight against a person using a "madu", or consider them a ...

You don't see a lot of "proper" madus in the Middle, but you'll see some sword and spear fighters. Like any other weapon style, it's the guy holding the weapon that is dangerous. The whole "rush 'em and throw wraps and offsides" tactic people have espoused frankly will work again...
