Made out of rattan? Wow - Not in the Midrealm. Single hand spears, yeah - but if it is SUPPOSED to go flying? Nope. More an more of us are playing with them. The trick to throwing them is really the gauntlet. Hard to throw "clean" with clamshells - REALLY hard with hockey gloves. I've foun...

In the Midrealm at least, ANY polearm or other great weapon lacking sufficient flex can be disallowed from the list.

So if the 2" thik polearm is too stiff, it won't pass.

Problem with laminated blades is that they nearly always (in my experience) make a weapon too stiff - which is why they were originally banned. Apparently this rule has been lifted at the Society level, but in the Midrealm it is still against the rules - Now I could see if the "lamination" was over ...

Damn - that is a freaking big oversight IMO.

I've seen some lunkheads out there try to use some insane weapons (usually maces and polearms) - I'm going to make sure if it is still in the Midrealm Handbook.

That's been the problem I've seen - to make one that LOOKS like the real deal, you usually end up basically making a mace with only one "flange" out of foam (remeber, no laminated swords). Now Duke Comar had a NICE one, carved from a piece of EDR (Elephant dick rattan). The rattan was nearly 4" wide...

Rhys -

I see your point, but I wasn't intending to speak only about determining the winner of a bout or a tourney. A fighter can beat 25 guys and win a spiffy prize - and still be judged by everyone who watches him fight.

For good or ill - isn't that reknown and fame as well?

Bingo V. There are those groups/individuals who have the capability to force fundemental change in SCA combat by force. If the right person or group starts saying "We will only take blows at X+1 power, everyone else adjust to us" - eventually it will happen. But then someone says "Nope - now it is X...

Rhys - Yep, we're talking SCA. And since the people posting on Armour Archive represent a miniscule percentage percentage of FIGHTERS, let alone people who attend events, discussions like this should at least take into account this fact - regardless of your opinion of how those people's knowledge, m...

In period I agree Rhys - but what about the SCA?

Like it our not, we as fighters are watched AND judged by those on the sidelines - other fighters, ladies, casual observers. And IMO it would arrogant, if not foolish, to totally dismiss them.

But wait... That assumes that the 2 warriors in question CARE about the opinion of those watching, doesn't it? Seems that the popular belief put forth here is that the opinion of anyone NOT in the armor being struck doesn't matter, as they are either in a poor position to judge, not knowledgeable en...

VERY well said Sir Vitus. Success in the SCA can be a very seductive thing - Like being a rock star or a superstar athlete in our little world. Not only recognition and symbols of respect, but to have people not only emulate your behavior and ideals? What an ego boost that is. And very dangerous. Di...

OK Your Grace, just for the sake of discussion..... In perdiod, there is at least one example of a weapon made to resemble a "non-weapon" - a mace made to look like a fist, IIRC> So we got a Grand Melee where all weapons are required to be disguised as something that is NOT a weapon! I know, I know....

Not poking fun at anyone, or any activity. I guess I'm not so easily offended. If I see a tourney or acticivty I don't want to do, I don't go. Bar fights aren't really my cup of tea, so I don't do them (I can only think of one that happens with any regularity in the Midrealm, did it a few times, hav...

I guess I just don't see it as some horrible affront to the SCA.... If they choose to run a bar fight, it is one "fight" (I've never seen a "winner" declared in an SCA bar fight) in a day, in all the tournies in all of the SCA. It is just goofy fun. We're adults dressing up in suits of armor and pla...

Quite a few guys in my neck of the woods used a guige (sp?) strapped shield and a spear back in the mid to late 1980s. More than a couple got pretty good with it. About that same time, you saw the "mudflap" shields, designed to keep hooks off. When Pennsic went to the "shield must be controlled by h...

And tape with metal in it (like aluminum duct tape) is not allowed because of it's propensity to flake and send little bits of metal flying -

And this isn't BS - I ended up wearing an eye patch for several weeks becuase of this very thing....
