Oh, absolutely Odo!

To me, a year or two of Mid and East as Allies would do wonders to revitalize Pennsic.

Especially to give an oportunity to get away from the same old / same old!

Field Battle #1: Standard field battle rules Two mighty armies meet at a raging, deep...

The Irish did quite a lot of raiding (and trading) in Britian in this period, didn't they?

Could have come across the armor and other gear that way, right?

And I do appreciate it, really.

But this is for SCA combat, and I need to balance performance, appearance and my own skills/money/comfort.

but hey, I AM planning on getting rid of the plastic lamellar, so it isn't a TOTAL loss, is it? :D

You know, I THINK I've seen information that some period shields were set up for BOTH center grip and strapped. (I could be really punchy from lack of sleep too).

I could see why you would do it too - using a round shield in a static wall or on foot is different than from horseback.

OK, thanks for the help everyone.... I'm really not planning on going with maille (for a variety of reasons), and was also trying to avoid the "naked fighter" look since it seems to generate a ton of complaints from later period / heavier armored fighters. BUT, it looks like what seems to be accepta...

Animal -

You might be able to wet form and harden a leather handle like armor - I made one similar to that, sewing the grip area of the leather strap into a tube. I used a 12/14 oz leather, and it didn't move much at all when bolted on.

It's kind of disheartning to see a thread about Acts of Chivalry at Pennsic devolve again into "This guy/group/kingdom cheated". Let's face it - NO individual or group is going to go through Pennsic 100% clean. It just isn't going to happen. Guys I fought this year didn't take shots I thought were g...

Cool info!

Would you guys think that maille under some sort of leather armor (scale, lamellar or even some sort of re-inforced tunic) would work? Still have the maille, with rigid protection over it. I could make some sort of lightly padded gambeson / crash vest underneath.

Boy, if I though I could get away with the maille, I might. But I can't afford ready made rivited maille, or the kit to make one. maybe something similar with a leather scale or lamellar?

Would a solid leather breast and back plate be out of the question?

Just snowballin' here guys.....

I was thinking along the same lines - maille, scale and lamellar. I was kind of curious if I was missing anything. I heard an interesting idea that the later period writings on early period warriors refered to them as "naked" or "unarmored" when compared to the warrior of the time of the writing (co...

I assumed the arm and leg gear would be hidden - I was mostly concerned with the body armor. I know about the "wide belt" from the Tain, which covered CuChulaihn (sp) "from armpit to hips" sounds like a version of the rather common "Body bracelet" some fighters wearin the SCA. And I figured that the...

I kind of figured that Dave, but I was looking to make something that would invoke the right "look", since the likely most historic gear wouldn't be horribly suitable for the SCA. Hidden gear would work I suppose, but I would prefer to have visible armour of some sort. I really feel it should be pos...

Personally, I really like the emotions that many of the photos that Ursus and Darter take capture. To me, it makes them much better in terms of capturing the "flavor" of the SCA than even some living history quality kits that you see.

The SCA is about the PEOPLE, first and foremost.

Absolutley. At the risk of sounding like I'm making an excuse for losing.... My experience with Waldryk has always been exceptional. Decent communication, and a darn near bullet-proof helm!

I have ordered 3 from him, and at least 5 other people I know are VERY happy with the Waldryk helms they own.

Very high reccomendation.

I think it will be way too difficult to pull off realisticly on larger peieces (like arms, legs, and body) without investing in some major work - like metal professionaly airbrushed to look right. Even then there is a lot of upkeep. For something like a gorget, it would work until the leather discol...

Contact the local group!

You are living in one of the BEST areas of the Midrealm for training, armoring, etc.....

I can all but gaurantee that those folks can armor you for a HECK of a lot less that $600 - including helm - and it will look a LOT better!

Remember, the opinions here on AA are by NO means the majority in the SCA -
