Re: No Mind. Do you use it & How?
You don't "Turn on" or "Turn off" mushin or zanshin. If you are trying to do that, you aren't succeeding. It is a way of being. Just becuase Bruce Lee couched the idea of "being like water" in terms of combat, doesn't mean that is the only time you would be that way. And Musashi's teachings were for...

Re: Regarding the Matter of a Case of Axe and Sword
Yeah, frankly you would be better off hitting the guy in the face with the top of the axe (like a face thrust). Even then, you better be a big dude, a good boxer, or throw and uppercut.... Try it with a real axe, and you'll see the problem.
Use an axe like an axe.

Ah. I fight in full gauntlets, so I can thrust from the front line or throw. And it is easier to arm with the sword without a basket-hilt.

Re: Javelins
Been doing it for years.... The tricky parts are - 1) Carrying the extra javelin - in period they would carry it in the hand behind the shield. Hard to do with an SCA javelin. 2) Throwing - it is not easy in gauntlets, especially clam-shells. Take a look at how track and field guys throw - it isn't ...

Shit. We just broke the final seal. Sorry 'bout that whole Armageddon thing everyone...Diglach and I agree about something.
There are many technically legal but cheesy moves in SCA combat - kind of depends on each person's combat lactose intolerance level.

Re: A question about impeding blows.
The whole "placing your arm so it impedes the path of the blow" never really bothered me becuase A) That means your arm is also out of play. and B) You are assuming I can only throw a small range of blows, and C) You assume I can't hit your arm hard enough. As far as the crowd/gallery/people watchin...

Drill a hole somewhere unobtrusive, near the bottom of the helm - if this doest fix it by itself, then put rivit in the hole - LOOSLY - it should wiggle. That should help.

Forearm is a legal target.
The blow is light.
Seems pretty straight forward - as long as you aren't pressing into his weapon (trapping).

In this case, unless you have a hand controlling the shield, it would be treated as armor, not a shield. That rules been in place for years...
I used a small heater with a lance style cutout and I could use it in a typical two handed spear style with the heater providing a good bit of protection.

Re: Fighting Spear and Shield?
In the press, I find a lot of guys can't tell a thrust from their buddy's shield or someone's elbow hitting them. Too much jostling going on. when they are static, it is usually easier. I stabbed someone so hard in the stomach this last pennsic that their weight was shifted and they had to reset the...

I think it depends on the "personality" of the guy using it. Both have their merits.

Re: Hitting the same spot mutliple times
Any kind patterning works - but it can work both ways. I teach "never do the same thing three times in a row". If it didn't work the first time, and it didn't work the second time, you shouldn't expect that it will on the third time - and by the third time, any competent opponent will recognize wha...

On the last shot, I let the blade return just a little bit further.... throws the timing off, blade ...

Re: Hitting the same spot mutliple times
Yup. All in the proper mechanics. My second shot typically involves a lot more hip/weight shift, then reversing the action - the sword returns far enough that I can get to speed on the next blow. A lot of your weak "double taps" comes from the guy throwing the blow trying to fire the second shot wit...

If you don't want to wear garb, don't stick around for court, feast, etc. Just go, armor up, fight, and leave. The problem with siloflex was that the hollow tube swords (2 or even 3 layer) flexed a LOT, especially on metal armor. After a while, it would start holding the bend, no matter how much your straightened it. The rattan cored siloflex were better, but as the rattan inside pulverized, you had no way o...
