Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA

I'm not trying to be snarky, but I think that *you think* you're being matter of fact sometimes, when others think that you're being confrontational.
Maeryk confrontational?

No....way.

Re: I your first kit as bad as mine?

There are no pictures of my first armor. Cave paintings, maybe. Carpet and duct tape, Knee cops that could double as the hood of a late 1960's VW Beetle, A wooden shield about 3/4 of an inch thick, with an steel rim. Helm was one of the first "movible visor" helms in the area - I was sooo cool. It a...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA

Talk to everyone you are going to camp with.
Ask them what THEY think.
Do what the majority wants.

The group I camp with, the modern tents AGREED that the period tents up front was a good idea.

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA

If the group agrees to it, put the modern tents in one area, the period in another. Let folks know this is what the camp does.

As far as the "Coleman chair in the period tent thing" - I make sure I have pleanty of seating for visitors under my shade. Rarely is a problem.

Re: Talk to me about Pennsic!

I've always chalked the "51 week ice run" line sort of like the folks saying "welcome home" at troll - it's a tradition. A silly tradition? Yeah, but harmless. Heck, I've made it a tradition to arrive in the TShirt from last Pennsic I attended, and leave in the one I bought at Pennsic for that year....

Re: Talk to me about Pennsic!

I remember a particular Pennsic. The evening walk back to camp, where there is a point that it is a dirt road, trees and light from the moon and torches. I remember slipping into an easy, restful sleep in my tent, to the sounds of drums in the distance, the crackle of campfires, and conversations. W...

Without seeing a pic of the helm on you, I'm just guessing - but 1 1/2" sounds like it exposes a nice hunk of vertebra.... Are you able to get a local metal worker to add a metal aventail/whatever to cover it? If not, I would go with a nice beefy gorget. I've taken an unprotected shot to that part o...

Uh yeah. I would say stiff on the back (though the thought of using leather if the helm is that short to expose excess neck gives me the willies). For the front, softer leather so it "folds" a bit when you move your head.

Seriously - how much space are you covering?

Re: Fiberglass Spear construction/use idea and opinions want

Yeah. makeing a move that could be considered (or turned into) a thrust with a weapon that didn't have a thrust tip is not cool. Might even be illegal...

And if you padded the end, you have a 9' double ended spear, also a no-no, I think.

I would just go with counter-weighting it.

I made mine based on a "cudgle head" in an Irish museum - it's lots of fun, and works well tucked into my belt as a back up weapon.

Johnathan - How? A good blow is a good blow, right? IMo, the biggest issue with maces in the past is that they needed to have a lot more "give" than they do now - heck, some of the old tennis ball maces were pretty dangerous to the guy swinging it, due to the bounce. Albrecht - Also, the part of the Midrealm you live in is kind of "wonky" in terms of melee units - some strong Baronial Units, a couple strong shire units, lots and lots of households - some crossing state lines - I would not be exaggerating with an estimate of 20 DIFFERENT units represented in Ohio...

And I've been accidentally killed by my own guys. At least I assume it was an accident.

II - A torse wouldn't work on every helm, and there ar a lot of households, units, etc - some who switch sides - so heraldry might not work either. I would be bummed to see a bunch of kick-ass Norse kits covered by a surcoat. The "I'm on your side" works in smaller combat, but Pennsic is another bea...

Re: SCA Topic- The Measuring

Here is what I consider "the measure" - When you fight YOUR preferred weapon form against a Knight's preferred weapon form, you force that majority (like 75%) of those opponents to really go to their "A" game. Win or lose, the Knight somes off the field saying "Damn! Real tough fight!" - with a smil...

It can be hard to judge prowess, sometimes. Especially, I imagine, if you are one of the top 2% in your Kingdom. These are the fighters who have (or could easily have) 4+ reigns, or who have become a real influance on the entire fighting culture in their Kingdom - in that rarified air, it can be dif...

Since it is the INSIDE of the cop, POR15. Never rusts again. Used in the car restoration for rusted pans, wheel wells, etc. Can be a little tricky to work with (Don't get water in it - as in, don't even drop sweat into the can), but it is pretty awesome.
