Re: Something is wrong with my fighting and I'd like some ad

David - Sounds like a confidence thing - how much you "trust" your offense vs. defense. The problem might be how you practice. Sparring is not practice. Work with an opponent on specific targeting, techniques, etc. You throw shots, he blocks. Don't worry if he blocks them, focus on proper technique,...

Re: Long term wear and tear...

Agree with the above. A lot of SCA fighters do exercises that don't help the joints that are stressed in SCA combat. And a lot of people lean heavily on blows and techniques that seriously strain the joints. My doc watch viedo of SCa fighters, and described some people as using the same basic mechan...

Ding! +10 I remember when there was a big crowd watching the various champions' battles. People cheered both sides. It was big deal. Hasn't been that way in at least 10 years. Time to take an extended break from them, at least as war points. If we even need war points. Just tell me how many red belt...

Re: SCA Heavy Combat's Inherent Problem

Local standards. Practice, TRAVEL, and you learn the acceptable power levels for your Kingdom and how to register them in the armor you wear. Then it doesn't matter who hits who, as everyone would be in roughly the same acceptable range. If you are at an out of Kingdom tourney, take a few minutes to...

Armor as they did, or modify your on the field portrayal. Most fighters (especially new fighters) head-hunt, so body shots are less common, espe...

If I see a fighter hitting people low on a regular basis - as a marshal and a Knight, I will speak to him about his ability to fight safely, and within our rules.

Hit more events than the last two years.
Continue improving overall kit - fighting with weapons my portrayal used.
Continue to improve conditioning.
Help other achieve their goals - especially my squires.

Spank Blaine more. (Hell, I've never met him, but it seems to be on eveyone else's list...)

It is tradition in many realms, and was only reserved in the late 90s (from my recollection).
Reserving it is about as dumb as mandatory elbow cops behind shields.

In the Midrealm - Any ToC, Candlemas, Val Day. Red Dragon is getting up there - 106 fighters last year.

In melee season, probably North Oaken War Manuevers, Simple Day.

Midrealm (IMO)

Brannos
Bardolph
Ullr
Rangvaldr
Palymar
Felix
Edmund
Rutgur
Cellach

Among the Midrealm Chiv, this would give you a VERY representative cross section of Midrealm styles and tactics.
