You know Johnathan, there is only one sure way to make the SEM office work exactly the way you want....

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

Well, why not suggest that?

I could see approval / changes based on the vote of KEMs, the SEM and the Representative for the Marshallate on the BOD.

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

Like I said Johnathan - AA is only one small group in the SCA fighting universe. The fact the the SEM came on, participated in discussions at all should be considered cool. Imagine trying to keep up on EVERY fighting message board, discussion group, etc.. on SCA combat? The guy has a real life and a...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

Just becuase he isn't REQUIRED to make any special considerations, or take into account the opinion of others, doesn't mean he isn't doing so. And the AA does not represent the majority of fighters in the SCA. Heck, opinions on rules and such have been made by people who aren't in the SCA. You seem ...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

Hey, I was just tossing out an idea based on the conversation. Some people choose equipment/weapons for the recreation. Some for a "sport" advantage. I really don't care why someone chooses the way they do, just be honest and have fun. How about a rule that "No weapon designed with th...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

Hand protection = gauntlet. Johnathan - Personally, I don't find madus to be particularly devastating to fight against. The guys who were really good with it would have been just as good with a shield, or a single tip spear and a gauntlet. We had a couple fighters in the Mid try them out, decide the...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

None, I suppose. Personally, I don't see madu's as a weapon that was ever, even in the rarest occasion, used by the vast majority of the portrayals in the SCA. And the most period example, as built, would be illegal as a "punch shield", or offensive shield. People use the madu to "gam...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

How about a rule that "No weapon designed with the primary intent to be used in one hand can have a point at BOTH ends."

Though I might change "point" to "offensive head or point" to avoid the whole pike-maul issue.

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

Hardly. Tournaments were competitions, for prizes - sometimes renown or fame. Judicial bouts were to settle legal disputes. The other versions of this were judicial weaponry (German) - none of these appear to have been used in "regular" combat. . So you're advocating that madus/adagas can ...

Re: Attack or wait?

Agreed - Sometimes I think too many new fighters skip the VERY important step of just fighting for the joy of it. They get it in their head that they need to be working on in-depth strategies and complicated combo-shots by their 3rd month, or they are failing. Fight. Get comfortable FIGHTING. Being ...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

See, I find the adarga as a Spanish/Moorish item - but that is strictly a shield - except for that one item - which had a center spike, which wouldn't be allowed in SCA combat. It also doesn't list an overall size. The next closest reference I find is a "Moorish Adaga", or Adagra, which wa...

Re: Attack or wait?

You might want to re-read your Musashi a bit closer..... Standing and waiting or even running away (= moving backwards) is the technique of cowards. It leads to a weak mind and bad fighting spirit. And it has no honour. Maybe the coward hits earlier than the active fighter. But such victories are wo...

Re: (SCA Armoured Fighting) Rule Changes

I'm not sure it is possible to make a weapon with "tines" like a pitchfork or a trident that would be legal, due to the inhierent "limb trapping" nature of the weapon. Unless you made it solid, with three points on a solid "body" instead of 3 times/arms. Which would loo...

Nor mine.

Frankly, probably 90% of my injuries are pre-SCA or non-SCA. SCA combat just aggravates them.

Most rubber cleats I've seen aren't fun to get stepped on by either I know it sucked when I played baseball. Those are specialized for playing in DIRT/base running. Most guys I've seen wearing cleats in the SCA are wearing 1/4" cleats for soccer or football, and typically "turf cleats&quo...

Re: Appearance - Fighting footwear

Depends on the cleat. You can get them in a range from 1/16" up to 3/4". The smallest are typically used for artifical turf, and are like golf cleats. Longer than that (and metal) is REALLY old school, or used for straight line sprinters in track and field. I could see problems with METAL ...
