Johnathan - it isn't like the rules could read "For everyone except the following people...."
Like it or not, our rules need to be tailored for the guys who fight JUST enough to maintain authorization, not the guy who fights 6-8 times a month.

Trail-running shoes for $25. About $8 of deer-skin, some Barge cement and a few stiches.
For indoors, switch trail-runners with Converse One-stars. $18.
I've made "bog shoes", but a little work, I could make toggle shoes or ankle boots really easy.

Re: "How could we help improve the look of the SCA"
I have made at least 2 dozen different armours in my 30 years in the SCA
This is kind of a significant factor, don't you think?
And not everyone has a natural talent for art - shape, form - that "eye" to make things look right.

Re: "How could we help improve the look of the SCA"
Give me a single opponent, fighting for joy and honor in cobbled armor, than a thousand jerks w/ a perfect period appearance. That single opponent usually tries to get better, becuase it is fun. A jerk tends to stay a jerk. And you come across as a real jerk. Hopefully, you'll eventually find that p...

IIRC, WWE guy was participating in a "goofy weapons tourney" or some such - the idea was to look silly. Hence the HOCKEY STICK he has as a weapon.
Deliberate silliness has it's place in the SCA too.

Johnathan -
Wasn't talking specifically about your posts. IMO awards help.
Be a good example.
Help people who ask.
Offer to help those who don't.
Show them it is FUN!
Acknowledge real effort.
Reward real success.
Accept not everyone thinks like you do.
Don't be an ass-clown.

So you don't have any idea what "boobie prize" means? If you really meant reward people for looking good, you should not have used the phrase "boobie prize". It's not a positive term.
Depends on the boobies, doesn't it?

We had around 90 fighters, 9 tournaments, 6 1/2 hours of uninterrupted fighting! NO waiting around - list space for pick ups all day. 26 member of the Chivalry in attendance. Lots of teaching, sparring, and good time all around!

Usually Samuel, I would just tell you to go away.
Personally I ask permission before I offer assistance, unless it is my squire/shieldman.
I tell my shieldman to listen to everything, discuss with me what they are being told, use what works, throw away what doesn't work.

I made "fake" bog shoes - go to the Red Dragon Event thread here and look at the picture of me - those shoes are covered trail runners. I also have a pair made with Converse One-stars that foold the moccasin guy at Pennsic from 10 feet. It's doable. Heck, a former AA guy (Owen) had desert ...

About the only thing in the Midrealm that will get you sideways looks is the blatently modern stuff - and even then, probably 90% of us won't give you more than a "Hey, if you like, I can help you hide or disguise that" unless you keep it around for a long time. You gotta be a real jerk ab...

Or you can hide / disguise the leg armor.
Or, if it looks GOOD, non-modern, you can tell the person snarking to "Get thee bent" - not wearing leg armor isn't everyone's cup of pain.

Do what you love.
Be a good example for others.
Encourage those who try.
Help those who want the help.
Reward those who succeed.
Accept that not everyone cares as much as you.
And don't let those people bug you too much.

I was influenced by people in the SCA to do less, not more. Only if you let them. More and more, I think it's turning into a Fantasy-LARP, but instead of re-enacting the fantasy world of Tolkien, Jordan, or Moorcock, it's re-enacting May Day 1966 in Diana Paxson's backyard... Only if you let it. I ...

A lot of people who had bad looking kits for years eventually got "bit by the bug" and put in the effort to improve. For some SCA may be something they just goof around with - not the hobby they want to invest heavily in, at this moment. In general - Do what you love. Be a good example for...
