I got a set of fingers from Gruber - the pinky, index finger and thumb ground. The others do not. Seems to be the best of both worlds.

No problems so far!

Re: Rawhide shield edge?

I've heard (not tried, myself) that using roofing nails and "tacking" the rawhide down is better than sewing it through a series of holes.

Someone did post a how-to here not too long ago. Might be in the "making it" threads.

I've cupped a couple guys with their own swords when they try the "between the legs" thrust.

Shield skip their tip up, then cross shot their blade back into them. Pin their weapon in position.

Don't use the Bronze/etc heavy stuff. Aluminium, stacked leather, other options exist for crosshilts, etc....

Re: Legal use of a baskethilt

Someone reminded me this past weekend of a melee a few years ago where an opponent was doing the "look through the basket hilt" block, and I was popping the hilt into his grill - not hard, but probably 8 or 10 times in succession. He got fed up (not angry, I knew the guy), started to charg...

Re: Thrusting in tourney.

If a thrust tip is a crutch to a new fighter, blame their teacher.

Same if the crutch is a wrap shot, some fancy off-side or any other attack they rely on too heavily.

Re: Royal whim for October Crown (West)

In this case, it's Royal Perogative. TRM can require all fighters to use shields of 'x' size, or not use specific colors of duct tape, or hide all modern looking gear, or wear 3 purple ostrich feathers on your helm in all tournaments and melees. Such is the power of The Crown If you can't abide the ...

Re: Legal use of a baskethilt

A lot of people who stick their hilt in front of the face hang the arm. Hit that. Heck, pop the forearm with a spear shot and the hilt goes into their face ANYWAY. Now granted, about 75% of the time I have to remind them the arm is a good target for a spear, or hit them multiple times before they ta...

Re: Royal whim for October Crown (West)

Don't fight with a round stick. A weapon with actual flat sides will tell you in a hurry if you are hitting flat. And if the Crown wants the Marshals to be more cognizant of flat shots, and they feel that cross-hilts will make it easier to do so, then that is their perogitive. Frankly, I'm betting m...

The "5 Step Charge" rule changes nearly every year at Pennsic - ranged from 3 steps to 5 step to "No full speed charges". None horribly enforcable, and frankly more people inadvertently / unintentionally break this rule than not. Goes back to the two rules 1) Don't break your fri...

There's always a trade off - keep the hilt in front of your face, you do give up some offense, and possibly create some other defensive problems.

Re: Thrusting in tourney.

In the Midrealm, it's thrown hard enough that you know it was an intended shot. We're not turning people into pez dispensers, but it isn't "light touch" either. If a thrust tip slows a new fighter's development - blame the trainer. All my squires have one, all learn to use it without relyi...

Re: Thrusting in tourney.

The point of my example is that if I lose to a thrust, my opponent will generally see that it was because I made a mistake they took advantage of, and once I up my game, then those holes aren't there, and the thrust was a hollow win. If the hole wasn't there, the thrust wouldn't have gotten to you....

But I agree that over-reliance on ANY shot is not a good practice.

Why does this need to change? Not many venues used in the Midrealm at least would be suitable for a hunt, anyway. Kind of like brewing and vinting - the majority of sites are dry. Doesn't stop people from doing research and brewing outside of those events. . It might not be common, even if permissi...

Yes, we trust our opponents but occasionally, through error or intent, that trust is broken. Very rarely, but it does happen.

The marshalls court is how we choose to deal with these rare instances.

The vast majority of the time, it works.

OK, it strikes you as "odd". I'm sure there are cultural things out there that strike folks out there as odd. That's not the issue. There have always been some real cultural differences between kingdoms (heck between REGIONS in the Midrealm, back in the day). It's the attitude you've prese...
