Re: Worst Pennsic XL Moments!
Marshal's courts say that you do not trust your opponent and that is very sad. What if the opponent is a combat archer? Personally, I'm not commenting on this particular incident. However on the whole, the process of the marshalls court at Pennsic DOES work. Either mediating misunderstanding that e...

This - I have been part of a marshal's court before. I have faith in that system. Having faith in that system does not mean that you agree with every decision that comes out of it. I was not present for this year's marshal's court at Pennsic, so I have no opinion of the matter, but allow me to relat...

Well, marshal courts are thankfully rare, so you might not have run across one before.
But it has been available as a recourse at every Pennsic I've been to - since Pennsic 14.
Right there, in the rules.

Yeah -
Sorry Balin - but Marshalls also make sure people are following the rules. And enforce the rules for those who choose not to. To think that this wouldn't be necessary, especially at an event the size of Pennsic, isn't very realistic.

Amazing that folks get to spend a week doing stuff we LOVE, and then focus on the WORST things that happened.
Especially the he said / she said stuff.
I too, feel the worst thing about Pennsic XL to me was that I missed it.

Re: Known World Novice Tourney - Pennsic 40
Boy - I do have to say - a left-handed fighter, ESPECIALLY a novice often throws a wrap aroudn the shield to hit the leg - often the lead leg. When a right handed fighter bends he knees to block it, it can often result in a cup shot. Usually, experience teaches the lefty to lower the point to avoid ...

2x4 uprights? Nope. 4x4 uprights? Better. Bridge battles are a different beast. If "rugby tactics" were less common than they are, I could see a system with a rail and the like. You have to take that into account - both the damage to the railing, and potential increased injury to fighters. .

Re: Possible replacement for hay bales
Pennsic HAS a fort - but for town battles / broken field or the bridges, maybe.
There are storage facilities nearby. Trick would be how long it would take to switch from a town set up to a bridge, and then clear them for the field.

By nature, I'm a "brawler" I suppose. But like Cathal and Brian, I try to play outside of my opponent comfort zone.

Yeah, pricey. Fit the bill though, might give us a starting point on alternatives. Plus you could get them printed in a "wood" or "stone" pattern to improve the look at a distance. I recall a couple of Pennsics were the buildings in the town battle had sheet walls - IIRC, the bot...

They used to do the mine at Blackstone with 2x4s and HEAVY black plastic sheeting (like the kind used for landscaping). Stood up reasonably well.

Ah, more plastic barrels on the field... (JOKE!)
With all the road construction in Ohio right now, we should use orange barrels... A 9' wide bridge would be like driving down I-75!

Exactly. I also throw it less as a "snap" (baseball pitch) and more like a "punch". My doc is a sports med specialist, with all kinds of neat toys (through Ohio State University) - the flat snap is very much like a baseball pitch, with a heavy ball that we hang on to - a practice...

Re: A Pas d'Armes at Pennsic. Challenge letter
The rule was put in place a couple of years after the last Pennsic Quest - apparently some camps were holding fights in camp, tossing out the SCA rules, etc.... And in one case, the fight rolled into someone's tent. Also, there were some complaints that bouts in public areas blocked up traffic, espe...

Re: Three defining blows.
1) Yup - I'm a lefty. 2) Orientation, targeting, front or back blade edge (thumb lead is back edge). A snap is a snap is a snap. The basic mechanic is the same, regardless of where the blade ends up. The power generation come from the same technique. A slot is a snap through a verticle gap, a thumb ...

Re: Three defining blows.
Throw a flat snap, but turn you hand palm down. It still shift the angle of the blade, though not as radically as a wrap. But it is also not going to screw up your shoulder or elbow.
The basic mechanics for on-side and off-side blows are the same - targeting is different.

The hose and droopy sleeves are late period. For earlier period, fitted pants (not as tight as hose, but not baggy either) and really any sleeve type.
Warm weather, upper classes didn't wear pants.

Leg. Head. Thrust.
Snap, thumb lead (I discourage real "wrap" shots due to the damage it can do to the arm). Everything is derived from those blows.

Yup, A cloak - could be really long, and used as a hood too. I've helped a new person do this - Found linen at $7.00 a yard, so a leine could be made for about $14-21, in a period cloth. Irish - pretty much any period from late Iron to Clontarf - Leine (long tunic) Belt (soft leather, not shiny) simple buckle. Brat (Rectangle of cloth) Gillies, even sandals - leather. You can find very passible sandals at many shops. Add "pajama pants" if you need to wear pants, or want to...
