Re: "Rude" Salutes

But aren't salutes, at least in word being inspired by someone (which is what I take the "Do honor to the one who inspires you), and all the rest just as much a part of the society? And isn't the "honor" someone brings to themselves, their ingdom and housholds really the glory of thei...

Re: "Rude" Salutes

Oh, I agree. I'm part of the "everyone finds the depth they're happy to swim at" camp. I just found it an interesting concept, to pick and choose the aspects of "medeivalism" one accepts. What may be "just a sport" to some is something else to another, its subjective, l...

Re: "Rude" Salutes

Not trying to be a smart ass or create an arguement - but if it "just a sport", why the medieval trappings at all? Why bother with surcoats, helms with period lines (I figure someone could make a helm better for stick combat, but wouldn't look historic), titles, persona names, etc.?

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

Part of my point was that the SCA is really a big group of folks. At the largest "umbrella" you're looking at folks who want to dress up and party, and people interested (to some degree) in history. Among th interested in history people, you have different sub groups of time periods, cultu...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

Want to experience a "magic moment" in the SCA? CREATE ONE. A few weeks back, Sir Gunnar Redboar and I went out to hold the field during pickups, and after a few moments where nobody came out to fight us, we decided to fight one another - but to make it more than the usual "pick-up&qu...

Re: So who is allied with whom this year at Pennsic?

Agreed. Since this is what inevitably happens, then we shouldn't act as if it doesn't. Or, write it into the Pennsic agreement that numbers would be even, and take the appropriate steps. Let the numbers stand. If East gains more swords then so be it. There shouldn't be too much BS expended in evenin...

Warriors at Pennsic

Regardless if you follow the Dragon or the Tyger -

Fight well, and be glorious! Wish I could be there, but I'm looking forward to the stories and pictures, but not without a little envy for not being there to share it all.

Safe Travels!

Re: So who is allied with whom this year at Pennsic?

I REALLY think that having a Mid/East allied against Aethelmarch and Atlantia for a couple of wars would go a long way for taking some of the bad aspects out, and inject a lot of fun back into it.

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

A way to reduce the rate of fire on crossbows would be to require ALL of them to be reloded from a stirrup. Some someone who due to a issue with their elbows, could just "waist cock" a x-bow - the put a dowel rod tube with rope through it as a stirrup - it hung out of the way when firing, ...

At tournamnet where my wife doesn't attend, she encouraged me to find someone to be my inspiration for the day. I often find a lady who is new to the SCA - often at their first event.

In these cases, I salute BOTH ladies.

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

1. A local group can hold and sponsor an event outside its borders, but cannot hold a Baronial Court at that event, except with permission of the „lending‟ group. Pennsic is exempt from this law. 2. The seneschal of the group sponsoring the event (the requesting group) will send in advance a writte...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

Why didn't someone take it to the baronial or regional seneschal, if they wanted to do the demo? If a specific officer doesn't want you to do something, what about their successor? Or their superior? Does the event steward not do the type of event you want? Run the next one. They won't LET you? Keep...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

Find one new person.

Show them the numerous options in the SCA experience, and encourage them to "try stuff".

Help them find and enjoy "their thing" in the SCA (within reason and the rules).

Teach them how to help others.

Encourage them to do so.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...

Now back on subject.... The Midrealm is a tube arrow kingdom, and while the siloflex and stopper style bolt seems to work fine for crossbows, the longer arrows for the longbow seem to be a bit more difficult, except for a few people who modified their bow or their shooting to compensate for the diam...

Also, I know at least 3 new people who went on THIS FORUM, and were lead to beleive that the attitude and behavior they saw here was representative of what they could expect from the SCA as a whole. One reaction was they "the SCA seems whinier and more bitchy that any of the fantasy LARP groups...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

IMO - I'm seeing the SCA becomeing lots of smaller "umbrellas" under one big one. You have people who are really getting into the research and presentation of their portrayals - 14thc Mafia, Norse, Heroic Age, etc... And these groups often cross household, shire and kingdom lines. Now SOME...

Re: So who is allied with whom this year at Pennsic?

Don't know, not too worried as long as we don't end up with a "Pieter's War" situation.

Even then, not too worried. Final score at Pennsic has always been secondary (or tertiary) to how much fun me and mine have, and if my lady enjoys herself.

The rest is just a vehicle for that.

COmbat archery has been apparently around for a looong time - especially in the West. Seem it has only become a real visible stink the last 5 - 10 years. Compromise is a wonderful thing. Problem is the people who are the loudest, supposedly or in appearance "doing the talking" on both side...
