Re: I think I have a fix for CA...
See, I don't. Far too entrenched in some Kingdoms' culture, and at least at Pennsic, too important to not have on your side, if the other guy has it. I could see it maybe being more balanced as time goes on, but it isn't going away. Does anyone REALLY think that CA is going to ever go away? . Yes ma...

Re: [SCA] Is deliberate spear breaking legal?
Does the frequency matter? Is it OK for someone to jam a shield edge into someone's grill, since it only happens a couple of time over he last few years?
Seems to me, if you break the rules, you are breaking the rules - reguardless of how often it happen.

Re: Rude Salutes
I have no idea. I was just messing around. And trusted Google for the translation. Don't forget: morituri te salutant! First, it was gladiators, not soldiers, who gave that sort of salute. But then, a tourney is probably closest to gladiatorial arena combat . . . Second, shouldn't it be salutamus (w...

Re: Hitting from behind on singles combat
Heh. Had a guy who got enamored with trying to through the "spin shot". BIG tell when he was setting it up, and he did it pretty often. So I saw the tell, and as he started the spin, stepped out and forward and hit him across both butt cheeks.

LOL! Reminds me of one of the first years with the Castle at Pennsic. A couple guys ran up to the closed doors at the start of the battle, banged on the doors and yelled "DOMINOES PIZZA! WHO ORDEED THE PEPPERONI?"

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...
Actually you can, as the rules allow Kingdoms to make rules Kingdom only that are MORE restrictive than Society minimums. I agree but we can't have a rule that says... fighters are presumed to be wearing a chain hauberk over a padded gambeson, with boiled leather arm and leg defenses and an open-fac...

Re: Rude Salutes
LOL! Last year in the castle /breakout battle I stood out in the open (spear) and challenged archers to shoot me. When they quit trying I yelled "GO BACK TO YOUR FARMS AND GET MY TRIBUTE READY!" One of them said he was laughing so hard he couldn't shoot straight. It was all in good fun. Wh...

You mean like swords always killing through armor with a single stroke, especially steel?
Indestructable shields, spear or polearm hafts?
Fighting from our knees?
There is a whole LOT about SCA combat that doesn't make logical or historical SENSE, but WORKS -

Re: Rude Salutes
I do salute my opponent, though not necessarily with a big flourish - often I just raise my sword and "dip" it toward them. Some opponents who I know well, I'll be more theatric, with a SHORT boast or statement of challenge.

Re: Rude Salutes
In Heroic Age Ireland, part of the purpose of the boasts between champions was to let your opponent know he faced a warrior of STATUS - that honors and valor was to be gained by facing him. Intimidation was also part of it, but not all. There were salutes too... But boasts weren't JSUT bombast. They...

Re: Rude Salutes
This past weekend, Sir Gunnar Redboar and I fought a single combat that started with taunts and insults (all in good jest). Afterward it escalated into a melee, Irish vs. Norse! It gave us a chance to entertain folks, get "into" our portrayals, be creative and it was a LOT of fun! In the F...

Thanks! Yeah, the "pony tail" crest did exist, but it doesn't appear that it stuck up in the air like a armored kewpie doll.... So I put it in at a more reasonable angle/elevation. I'm fixing some of the strapping on the body armor and redoing the shoulders a bit. So far, (KNOCK ON WOOD) I...

I reccomend this heartily as a way to go -

How do you know combat archers are unchivalrous? But to answer your question - Well, Avery and Varus kind of covered it. Spear in the air, whacked by a polearm and it breaks.... whoops! Sorry! Spear tip pushed on ground and shaft stepped on - assclown. Spear grabbed and pulled back, line crashes int...

Re: [SCA] Is deliberate spear breaking legal?
But there is still a difference - hitting a spear with the intent to disengage it or push it off line vs. the INTENT to break it.
Grabbing a spear with the intent to disarm the opponent - and grabbing it and trying to wrap it around a tree or wall with the INTENT to break it.

Had a fellow approach my unit on the Pennsic field once, all dressed in red (Middle Kingdom tape color) - we asked him which side he was on, no answer but he kept approaching, asked again, no answer but he kept coming, asked again, no answer, he came in weapon range and we gacked him - - - then he ...

Re: Etiquette on the war field
Most of the damage to helms from duct tape happens when they leave it on for months... Heck, we had a guy here who in the 6 or 7 Pennsics he went to with us, NEVER cleaned off the inspection stickers.... I see stuff like tape and stickers as necessary evils, especially in a large melee like Pennsic....

Re: [SCA] Is deliberate spear breaking legal?
Unless the guy had the point on the ground, it would be pretty difficult to break a spear by hitting it with a sword, unless the fiberglass was really old/sun damaged or flawed.
And if his point it on the ground, it isn't much of a threat...

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...
That's messed up. That isn't the fault of the CA people though, but the Marshallate who made those rules and the Crowns who negotiated them for wars in your area.
As far as I can recall, that has never been a rule in the Midrealm.
