Re: I need help

Have you hurt more than one person?

I understand that you feel bad, but sometimes, shit happens. Especially in a contact sport.

If you are doing it on a semi-regular basis to different people, then you might have a problem.

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

I'm working on making spears, small shields (for thrown spears), to do it matched weapon. For the thrown spear, I chalk two marks on the ground, and you must keep one foot on the mark when the opponent throws, and you can pass in front of the mark when you throw. Style points for NOT using the shiel...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

Actually, I've done my version of a "Feat of Arms" -

Thrown Spear at 2 long spears distance (20') - 3 spears each.
Spear and shield
Sword and shield
Short spear (6')
Single sword

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

Eh, I don't think it imbalances stuff THAT much, or anymore than indestructable shields or weapon hafts. Especially in a field battle, and even in some limited front, you don't see SCA combat archers getting off much more than that, certainly no more than 50, before they are forced to glean. Because...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

This year at Pennsic, CA'ers are being limited to the number of arrows they may carry, and there is no gleaning during the battle (for at least one battle). That limits the effectiveness a fair bit (only 25 shots?).

I've always thought shooting gleaned arrows was a bad idea.

Within SCA combat rules, deliberatley blocking with your hands is just as cheesy as targeting someone's hands.

Only you also risk hurting yourself. That is what what I call "the circle of dumbass" - do dumbass things, dumbass thing eventually happen to you.

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

Also, we already do senarios with and without CA, or with special requirement for combat or appearance (CoTT or single sword battles, for example) that work just fine. As long as there is a chance for people to fight without CA as well as with, it isn't like someone is "taking over". Get a...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

What "Magic Arrow"? I can't find a rule in the Society or Midrealm rules that says "any hit kills." Society states that the arrows should be counted a lighter hit than other weapons, but it is still up to the guy getting hit to agree that it was good - too light is too light, gla...

Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.

I've never been to an event where there weren't pleanty of battles/grand melees/whatever with and without CA.

IMO, people who complain incessantly about the amount of combat archery, either for or against, do so mostly out of selfishness.

There are exceptions.

The ties/lacing (which were an utter pain in the ass) were replaced by buckles - the buckles I now have I plan on replacing with period style buckles. The leine is longer, lower shoes instead of boots, and no pants.

From what I could gather, the wooden breast plate was worn strickly as a type of "bullet proof vest" concept - to protect against a knife thrust. I agree wood would (boy, say that 3 times fast) not be really suitable for armor. Mail, for earlier persona, scale. I did an interpretation on t...

Outside of the helm, everything else can be readily hidden. Get a helm with period lines or style. BLACK or brown shoes. lose the white nikes. Cover plastic. $5 for a can or spray adhesive or spray paint, and $5 - 7 for decent sturdy cloth. MAINTAIN it. Show some pride in your gear, plus it will wor...

I don't have my source on hand (I'm at work) but the only mention I've found on "wooden armor" was a plate worn under the tunic by a king as protection against a knife n non-battle situations (assassin).

I'll try to dig it up when I get home.

Depends on what kind of armor you are making. 13-15 ounce scales or lamellar gets pretty hard to wear, pretty fast due to the "stacked" thickness.

There are probably guys you could get to take it - don't know if it would be an accurate representation of what the weapon could do, especially on a helm with a mail drape and/or nasal. Not even taking the lower mass of a hollow tube dagger (part of the problem with the 3 layer siloflex swords). Sti...

Alaric -

If I am at an event and my wife isn't, she has given me the OK to find someone to fight for that day. I often find a new person, or someone who has never been fought for. Should I win any prize, it is theirs.

It may be a Victorian Romantic idea, but IMO it is a good one.
