Wow, your friend would not like me. I do that all the time, as well as grabbing great weapon hafts with my shield hand (I use a buckler, makes it easy).

Hockey gear bag with wheels. Opens with a zipper flap but has a second compartment for marshal paperwork etc so it doesn't get sweaty. What you can do to fix that is to add a strip of heavy rubber on the striking edge., such as the type used on the bottoms of traffic cones. Unpleasant to be struck with.
