Re: 14th Century Maces--How Long?
I remember when I started fighting with maces, they told me that people wouldn't call them because they were used to getting hit by rattan. I've had that happen exactly once. It was against a new fighter who's calibration was a little off. (3.25-3.5 lb mace) Solid shot to the head, nope. Solid shot ...

Makes me feel good about mine being 27". I'm becoming a big fan of maces. I've started using one with a small (11.5") buckler. It's fun.

I was not implying I was a large fellow, rather I was implying that Olaf and Matt were "travel sized". I'll have to keep in mind never to go to an event with them in the winter. They might get col and get an idea from the empire strikes back.

Mitten gaunts would be a great next step. I don't care for basket hilts at all. I'm afraid I'm turning into a period Nazi. Well damn. Pennsic is a no go for me. Sorry. Texas to pennsic, that's a long damn haul. It's a shame, I really need more axe work. And it would be good practice. I can't imagine it would be easy to hit your tiny tiny chest with an axe.

Depending on what you decide on, Forge of Svan looks alright. Ordered a gambeson from them, will see how it goes. Haven't seen any bad reviews of them so far.
Prices seem reasonable.

Advice for the Deed of Arms at Gulf?
I've never tried combat of this style before and I'd like any advice that y'all can give me. I'd been planning to figh with a buckler or a small center grip shield and a mace (this being the style I feel most comfortable with) After watching videos of the Thirty at pennsic online, I'm beginning to h...

I know we have a hydraulic press out side the shop. It may still be operational. I'll search through the archive and see if I can find a good tutorial for using one. Interestingly enough, for us, many new guys insist on a crusader style saltshaker. We always try to explain to them why a flat top is ...

Re: The history of the reinvention of the wheel?
Caius, MJB, I fear the best answer to that is one that involves capital outlay if DIY is the preferred road: 1. A battery of hit-tools/anvils/anvil subtitutes/shotbags, or else a discount-price 50-ton hydraulic press and a place to set one up in, to handle the metal bending (presses are quiet, and ...

I've also seen heavy leather done up into a greco-roman style leg covering. Overlapping pieces, in a belt that wrapped around the waist. Decently protective, mostly on account of the overlap and the size of the pieces of leather, which helped dissipate it over a larger area. I think it would likely ...

Back in my Amtgard days, I once made a kilt with electrical cover plates sewn into bands, kind of greco-roman looking. Worked very well as armor, as long as you weren't moving. Heavy as hell to run in and gave out awful shin bruises. I would not suggest it.
