Re: Painting armor and type of oils to use

Evapo-Rust removes rust, non-toxic to humans and is will not corrode other materials. It's a chelating agent that binds only with iron oxide. It looks like yellow water so I am sure it would stain materials that would absorb water. Soak overnight and rust is GONE! You can keep using the same fluid o...

Re: Weight Training for SCA fighting

No one has mentioned neck exercises. Your workout should include strength training for your neck. I think weight training is great for fighting, but overall I think cardio is more important. How much does your armor weigh? My entire kit, including clothing, armor, weapons and shield, weighs just ove...

Re: SCA sword/dagger scabbard designs

Finished a rondel dagger sheath. 9-10 oz leather throughout. I decided not to use a chape. Instead I made three triangular flaps and sewed the flaps closed into a point. Two layers of 9-10 oz at the throat keeps the sheath open. The belt loop is 9-10 oz folder over and riveted to the sheath, anythin...

While the Medieval Design padlock that you found is more authentic in appearance, this lock from KoA is pretty good for only $30 http://www.kultofathena.com/images/AH3863.jpg http://www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AH3863&name=Medieval+Lock Take a look through these links and you'll see that th...

Re: Rules of thumb/heuristics for pattern making

Maybe it's obvious, but... Your model must be wearing all of the items that will be worn under the armor when you measure for the patterns: tunics, gorget, arming wear, etc.

Re: wisby coat patterns?

I made a Type I from the patterns on AA. I made the pattern out of a heavy poster paper, which allowed me to actually try it on and modify the pattern. Remove from the pattern with scissors, add to pattern with more poster paper and tape. The heavy poster paper also makes a great pattern for tracing...

Re: SCA sword/dagger scabbard designs

Completed a "leather-over-cord" wrap to replace the grip tape that was there originally. Finished with some leather conditioner and a touch of Renaissance wax. Now onto finishing the scabbard.

This went so well I think I'll re-wrap my Del Tin 2121 grip - change it from black leather to brown.

Re: SCA sword/dagger scabbard designs

Well, I tried a wire wrap and it was a total failure. The risers on each end of the handle were too difficult to wrap, so now I'm doing a leather wrap instead. I suppose that if I were to try a wire wrap again, I would make a jig to hold the dagger, and procede very slowly, using dabs of Superglue t...

Mid-14th Cen, but I'll look at all examples.

Also looking for comments on the practicality of sheathing weapons for SCA. Hanging a dagger from a ring is pretty insecure and I think I'd loose it.

SCA sword/dagger scabbard designs

I'm looking for examples - both good and bad - of scabbard/sheath designs for SCA swords and daggers. Right now I've got a ring on my belt to hold my dagger, but am thinking about making something a bit fancier (and more secure) out of leather. Is this a good idea? Any experience with scabbards?
