Re: 1390s effigies: what's under the jupon?

Harry, a coat of plates is never simply 'a covered breastplate'. See Claude Blair's book on European Armour for an in-depth discussion on the evolution the Coat of Plates and its relation to the development of the true "white armor" breast plate. I think it's in the chapter on early plate armor 133...

Re: 1390s effigies: what's under the jupon?

By the 1390s the front plates in a coat of plates was starting to look more and more like an early breastplate. The fauld continued to be used. So, to the OP, you are correct: "covered breastplate with a fauld." There were many variations on that theme, but that was the theme.

Thanks everyone for your valuable input, especially Karen. That is exactly the evidence for which I am searching. What's your basis that Europeans had the same clothing as Inuit? The historical evidence does not support that it was common for people to have "rain gear" outside of cloaks and or additional clothing. Not quite true. The Inuit had very sophisticated and functional rain wear and cold weather clothing dating back thousands of years. Seems stange that "primitive" ...

Medieval rainwear

What was Medieval rainwear? I am looking for evidence-based answers on Medieval rainwear. What did they wear? Fullered wool? Leather oilskins? Gut skins? Waxed linen? What? Having spent many years mountaineering in the pre-Gortex era, I can say that I have spent a lot of time in severe weather in a ...
