Re: Evaporust - limited usage?
Agree with Blaine. Evapo-Rust is a iron chelating agent, which means that it binds iron. With each use, there are fewer and fewer molecules available to bind iron, and so it becomes weaker and weaker. You'll need to soak your mail for longer and longer periods for the same effect. You might also try...

Re: Gamebson as a faux "coat of plates"?
You must've sparred with fighters who hit like girls. When I was doing a Crusader SCA fighting impression what I did was this: I wore a weight lifting belt for kidney protection over a linen undershirt, and then my quilted gambeson on top of that. Then my maille on top of that. This was suffic...

haubergeon & gambeson depiction
Here is a photo from a merchant showing a short-sleeve haubergeon over a long-sleeve gambeson. Is there any historical basis for this? If so, for what time period? All of the images that I've seen with a haubergeon show a long-sleeve tunic that was worn over the gambeson. I've not seen any images wi...

Have you considered a jack? It's a bit more work for the tailor but looks great with a proper kit. I think what's what Thrifty Knight suggested. I think it would be too hot. I'd like some low-profile protection to wear under a mail haubergeon for SCA fighting... But want to maintain a period look of a gambeson. So.... The Canterbury Tales are a funny collection of the 14th C tales. I like the Miller's Tale especially. In this tale, Absalom was at Alison's window, and he tried to steal a kiss from her. 1) Historically, when did steel come into the picture as a mainstream building material to craft weapons and armour? Like what century? As other have stated, steel was used in weapons from early on. But iron was the priimary metal. Pattern welding was a technique of "welding" strips of steel into t...

Re: Medieval Knights May Have Had PTSD
PTSD is a universal part of the human experience. Recognition of the problem is a recent phenomenon. In fact, I would speculate that PTSD was more frequent then than it is now. Life was more brutal back then, and the warfare was much more "in your face." People were also not well educated, in genera...

Re: Armstreet is over a year late on my order
Last year I placed an order with Armstreet about a month in advance, with a stated deadline about 30 days from the order date. I was assured that the item would arrive in time.
The item arrived 2 months later.
It was, and will be, the last I order I place with that company.

I would also point out that Peter Johnsson does most of the research for Albion's sword line, and supposedly modeled the "Templar dagger" that was used for the movie, "Arn, The Knight Templar" on an actual late 1100's (12th century) piece. It just occurred to me where I've seen Peter's name before....

I too am looking at a southern Germanic/Bavarian knight under King Fredrick Barbarossa, 1152-1190 (leading up to, and into the 3rd Crusade). (Non-SCA) How accurate is modern dome-riveted mail?
