accidental terra cotta newbie rig
Guys, There is a lady in the my area that is interested in fighting SCA. She is a soldier in the US Army. She is coming to fighter practice with me tomorrow, and I asked if she wanted to try to get some sort of gear together today. You know, try to make the stuff fit a little better, so she could co...

I have one of Sebastian's Weapons. I have never had a boffer weapon before, but I knew I had to have one of these. Mine is a long one hander with a grippable pommel, so I guess you might call it a "Bastard Sword". It's amazing. It works just fine for extended use against metal armor. I attended a "B...

I think I am confused. I am hearing that there is little evidence that Thrusting was frowned upon in a period tourney. I do hear some very smart people telling new fighters all the time that knights in period would never thrust in tourney because it was a base and villainous thing to do. The obvious...

Fighters often pass into a period of fighting at about a year where they find out that they are calling a little light. This leads them to start to rhino a little. The worst behavior I can recall seeing was from me. The first time I did it, I was at Sir John Bearkiller's Birthday party, and I failed...

I have never been to a marshal's court, and I don't think I personally know anyone that has been involved with one. I believe that a marshal's court is the SCA's attempt to make a greivance procedure that is as fair and unbiased as possible. I think the reason for this is to make sure that when the ...

OK, Why don't some SCA fighters like thrusting?
Guys, I have heard from several folks that thrusting was simply not a thing that a decent knight did in Tourney. I am not disputing this. Thrusting SEEMS to me to be a technique with a pretty lethal intent, but I haven't ever seen any sort of documentation on it. It seems right, but I would really l...

I would second the fibre tape idea. I used to use hose clamps, but I kept having them break on me. The fibre tape lasts a whole lot longer, and it doesn't have that ugly bump from the hardware. On a different note, I have never met anybody who had an icefalcon Ducal grade basket that didn't reccomen...

i don't think i said anything that you listed Rev. George. Plus i'm sure i notice that my shield isn't the best, which i believe i had said. I looks like a pretty good sheild, if a little heavy. The combat worthiness of your sheild differs depending on the type of combat you wish to use it in. For ...

Hi all, I've got a good source for rattan in town (yep, harbour towns are great places to live in) while strapping tape is a scarce ressource (yep, living outside the US can make weapon construction by SCA standards a hard thing). So I rather replace than re-tape or repair ... You know William, The...

No, because there will always be many times that you won't get the boss there dead-on, and that's what the rest of the shield is for. So in that case, to restate my original question, how does one prevent the shield from swinging to one side or the other around the axis of the grip when it is struc...

You can't get DUCT TAPE in Europe? My God, what kind of backwards civilization are they running over there? I mean, I could understand insignificant things like food and fresh water, but DUCT TAPE? It can be done. I once saw John Bearkiller use a really short, really curved weapon that was made from a piece of papasan chair. I didn't ask him about it, but everybody called it a "Scythian Steaknife". I think he had made it for a limited weapon length melee calld a "Tavern Brawl". No idea how wel...

Alexander, I agree with you. I get about four months out of my sticks, and it would have to last a lot longer than four months for me to want to shell out more than the price of a basket hilt. I do, however, wonder how our answers might be different if the recipe above were possible with things that...

Wrong board. This should be on Combat and Weapons to get the best response. The two big groups that come to mind are the SCA and ARMA (I think that the Association of Rennaissance Martial Arts - I am probably wrong.) They are apparantly radically different in scope and focus. I think the SCA uses Ra...

I do have a little bit of a war story. On Wednesday of war week, I was about to take my evening rest (in my PJ's and everything) when I heard a lot of Giggling from just outside my tent. Dante, I will answer your question, but I don't really know anything. I am not an authority. Any of these facts may be wrong. Linseed oil is a by-product of Flax production. Re: Ugly CA Quivers at Pennsic
The worst was a 3 gallon white plastic bucket that was strapped onto a fellow's back via a chest harness. The arrows bristled from the bucket like porcupine quills in what seemed to me to be a Japanese style. But what was offensive was the fact that the bucket still bore labelling all over it of a ...
