I usually cut my one handed swords at about one meter. That's a little more than three feet. With these, I use a cup or basket hilt. For a sword you use with two hands, four and a half feet is a little short, but don't let that stop you. As far as I know, there is no rule saying that you cannot use ...

I also have a frog-faced grand bascinet that attaches to the b & b with straps. Neither one spins or endangers my face without a chin strap. The military chin strap I used for marshal inspections on my bascinet (then I'd take it off as it served no purpose) . Bascot, I have a real problem with this...

Well, I feel stupid. I emailed my friend from Berlin, and she said it was real. I am typing, not cut and pasting, so I might make some typos. She said, "Yeah, it's real. Not really worthy of a place in a museum though, unless it's a small local museum." And she said "late 1500s had well-espablished ...

Lynxicanus, My pell is a pair of tires, hanging by a chain from the rafters in my barn. I use a small tractor tire for the upper one, and a bigger car tire for the lower one, so it is kind of like fighing with a deranged snowman. I like to get the thing swinging, so that I am not hitting a stationar...

OK, I cracked a book or two, and I figured out what I feel is odd about the five line staff. Please note, I still could be very, very wrong about this. I really know very little about period music notation. The book is mixing elements of Ars Nova (new notation) and Ars Antiqua (ancient notation). Bo...

All right, I am In Service to Kane's lady, Illissa the Nightwatcher. I have known Kane for about fifteen years. In modern fencing terms, "Right of way" is when the attacker extends his/her arm to thrust or lunge. If the arm is bent you do not have right of way. If your opponent extends his arm out first for a thrust, you may regain right of way, by parry and riposte. Right of way is one of the aspects used b...

I have always used a 24" round sheild since coming to Drachenwald. I have used them side strapped, and I am currently using a center grip. Guys,
I will be a position soon where I will need to understand fencing Right of way.
I have always found this to be almost incomprhensible.
If somebody here understands it, please explain it to me.

The big shields in Devon's example are usually called "hewing shields" and they were specifically a judicial thing. Center grip shields did not actually disappear. As methods of killing one another improved, soldiers changed their defenses to meet the new threats, but the shields were still manufactured, and I assume still used, for a long, long time. Henry VIII's bodyguards were issued center grip pistol shields...

Ring mail appears to have either been used very little, or not at all in midieval Europe. It seems to be the product of shorthand techniques for the drawing of "chain maile". Wulfgaard, I have a question, while you are still around. Do you wet shape your the teardrop shaped spangen "plates" in your caps? Folks, I would like to ask a difficult question. I am not positive that there is any one "Correct" answer, but I figure that asking it is still worth doing.
