This is really ironic as I was about to ask this very question. Thanks everyone for giving me a jump in the right direction....

<<< I think the way to way to introduce the concept to the SCA is treat hits to the hand and wrist like a cup shot, you don’t target them intentionally but if they are struck they get counted as a good shot. >>> I agree -and I am constantly blocking (unintentionally) with my poor little hands. Thanks everyone for the interesting replies. I basically make munition armor most of the time and I was just curious how everyone else defines it. My munition type armor is made from the same metal as my nicer armor, but without the sanding and polishing -plainishing is not as refined in some cases....

SyrRhys: You are correct, but here is a problem with this though. This is the SCA, not actual medieval combat. All these manuals that you will refer me too will show combatants fighting with the same weapons (greatsword v/s greatsword.) This works fine in these circumstances. The slight cut that I m...

Those are my auction -I sold the two rattan weapons (a sword and an axe) for $250.00 and an identical set for $150.00 the next week. I sold the three weapons (a 24" mace, a 32" mace and a 32" sword) for $51.00 and a 4' battle axe for $54.00 So the prices are going down, but' I'm still making money o...

I have a 6’ unpadded polearm for individual combat, and a 7 ½’ polearm for melees. I actually HATE unpadded polearms and think that they are unrealistic (Q-staffs as someone already said) because thrusting someone with a real polearm would be much harder with a large blade in the way. Everyone ...

Stephen Did you tell them that you really only want the bottom for armoring? You may be able to get one of the metal shops to just cut off a bottom or two for you and they could use the rest of the tank as the "accounted for portion. Just a thought. You could also try a welding shop. They may have a...

I feel that most people avoid the mace weapons for the speed factor. It's much faster (and easier) to slip that sword between your opponants gaurd then that mace or axe. Shafting is another problems that swords don't have, and axes are a pain to land properly. This is a great example why the SCA sho...

No one seemed to state a time period. Since Oriental martial arts has influenced the modern world -this is not a fair question for our time period. So my take is as follows: Back in the time of the Roman empire, I would go with the West. This was the time of the gladiator and I'm not even sure Orien...

Ok this is my OPINION on the subject. I can understand adding a counter wieght to the butt of a spear because I find the tip heavy spear head very hard to aim. My advice is to use 16g aluminum for areas that do not get hit alot. I used 18g aluminum for my elbows, knees, and body armor for years -so 16g would be better. I would say no for gauntlets unless you don't get hit in the hand. Also remember that aluminum gets stronger as yo dish it, so 16g aluminum...
