From what I understand, the shield were made from 1/2" plywood with an 8oz leather edging. The new shields are suppose to be made from 1/2" plywood with a thin leather covering, and an 8oz edging. This is supposedly the period method of doing it -from what I understand. I was the person who started ...

<<< Your mention of "great sword" (which I consider a two-hander, not a hand-and-a-half), in reference to a friend of yours had me wondering. There was a rather spirited debate on another tourney forum in regards to a "3 shot rule" that would make shields ineffective after 3 hits. I demonstrated how...

Bojei Temur: I hope to see you there. Me and Conrad are actually part of White Waters (the actual group at war with Rivenstar) so we shouldn't be too hard to find. I believe Conrad still has an Armor Archive sticker still on his helmet to -so look for that. I will definately keep an eye open for you...

Personally I don't think youths under 15 or so should be allowed to fight in a list. My oldest son, who turns 6 next month, won't understand anything except swing until someone drags him off the field -either as a winner or a loser. I feel that everyone under 15 (in kingdoms where they do allow yout...

Counted blows because it is more period and it gives new fighter a chance. I feel bad for the newbie fighter who gets sniped right off the field before he even knows the fight has begun. At least this way he has to get pummeled before he crawl off the field. Lol... I do feel that great weapons shoul...

Another thing to consider is the type of helmet used. A 16g 4 piece spagnhelm top is pretty solid, but a 16g sugarloaf is little more then a pop can. I have a 16g (yes it is a legal thickness gauge) that dents way to easily -especially midway from the eyes to the top point. 16g spagnhelms =good. 16g...

1) When you buy the plywood, make sure to get one that has a 5 ply layering rather then the 3 ply (it will look like a double hamburger rather then a sandwich) _it's relatively stronger and should only cost slightly more. 2) You can place your covering on the shield and then put the boss on -it actu...

Personally I think we should get rid of 12g helmets -I just can't swing hard enough to people wearing helmets that are that thick. I also think that this is a territorial problem. If your kingdom is a hard hitting kingdom (and you know who you are) then perhaps that kingdom can strengthen thier helm...

This was my second SCA helmet and I had the same problem -it touched my nose. I had to pad the front of the helmet so that my nose would hit foam rather then steel -however this idea also limited my vision. Another problem I had with this helmet is that it's top heavy. The gorget should be fine -hard over soft is the rule. But unless there has been a major change in the rules somewhere that I missed, the helmet must have at least a 1/4 closed cell foam everywhere the helmet may touch your head. However you could put your batting idea on top of the blue foam. (^_^)...

I throw what I call a "thumb leader" type rap which is equal to your snap wrist. I throw this rap for two main reasons. 1) It's natural for me, so I can throw it without thinking about it. 2) because the sword lands where my thumb is located, I can verify that my blade hit my target -rather then hit...

Leather Armor Question -HELP!!
I am replacing my 45 lb chainmail hauberk with a suit of leather armor and was wondering if someone can tell me how inticately desinged leather armor was during the early middle ages.
