They say to allow 3-4" for padding so it should fit with a bit more then minimal padding.

Most people like 3 - 4" for padding. This helmet would give you 3 1/2".

Yeah I don't really see the difference in weight either and I went back and forth between stainless and mild depending on my persona at the time. I don't have any stainless thinner then 14g so........

I make mild steel versions for $25 -which shouldn't matter if you are going to cover them up with leather...

A greathelm would definately be the way to go for your first helmet. You can always upgrade later if you desire.

I wish I had the time to help you out as I could make one for you if I wasn't swamped with orders. There just isn't enough hours in the day....
