sub $100 helmets are really not realistic. Hjalmr charges more than $100 and he WAAAAAY underprices his helms. But, he does it because he wants to learn and likes helping new people out. yea we have nails...i was just unsure of how trustworthy nails would be when it comes to getting smashed in the face with a big rattan stick. All of my non-welded helmets are made with nails. I have been doing this for 17 years now (minus the 5 years I was welding all my helmets) and I haven't hear...

Probably should mention what style you want (if it matters) and what grade you want (get out on the field, or so shiny kings bow in respect).

I can make them, but they are munition grade and more SCAish.

Cheapest quick fix and you won't feel bad cutting them off after wards to replace them with rivets later.

Why not just buy some RIVETS!!??

Nails are your next best option, but I'm sure someone here can direct you to someone who sells rivets if you really want to make it like new.

Yeah that is cool. I have been thinking about separating the nasal/brow due to the amount of smaller pieces I have laying arounbd and this makes me feel that I was on the right track.

Wouldn't dying the rattan break the rule about applying anything to the rattan? I really don't see any problem, but I was always under the impression you couldn't stain, dye, paint, laquer, etc, the rattan (assuming its for SCA) as it changes the flexibility of it. I would say 1/2 and 1/2. Some have been changed and some have not. $150 is the going rate for my typical 14g Stainless helmet. More complex helmets (like a kettlehelm, Klappface Bascinet, Etc) are a bit more $165 - $200 depending. I do plan to update my flickr site this holiday weekend. For now it i...
