Burnishing the edges of your straps also can make a world of difference in appearance, and can even to some degree hide wobbly cuts. I am always suprised at how rarely I see this done. Cut your straps so they run "lengthwise" along your leather, if you cut "cross grain" the leather will stretch funny
If you have a piece you are using primarily for straps, belts, etc take a metal straight edge, and true up one side, after that use a strap cutter.

I frequently give rattan a drink (soak in water for a day or so) prior to making a sword, if anything it increases the flexability,
glue on the other hand is right out, it stiffens the rattan significantly.
On the brighter side glued swords tend to break since they have less give

Good Luck with it, let me know if parts of it are a bit obscure. It's sometimes hard to describe a series of sequential movements.
The wrap to the back of the legs can be a bit tough to practice on a pell because of the angles involved

That is law in a number of countries - no guildmasters, no guild.
