IIRC, I used 4 layers of cotton batting. Quilting makes it stiffer. To be honest, I'm finding that the protection isn't eough for my legs. At worst you should wear whatever gauntlet you wear fighting, and carry your shield in a proper guard while practicing so you won't fall into using an attack you can't throw in armor.

Captain Jamies (by my hand) rubber polearm heads are amazing - glue / strapping tape them in place, run an ensolite layer on the cutting edge, build up the thusting tip a bit and you're good to go - the silouette is tremendous
