The Elusive Rus Scutum

In Ian Heath's book 'The Vikings', Angus McBride illustrates a Rus warrior from Kiev c. 975 carrying a rectaungular shield, about four feet tall, with a boss in the center. Reading the descriptive text at the back of the book, the illustration is apparently based on a passage written by one Leo the ...

Our boffers are made with 1/2" PVC with the pool noodle over. I shave the sides of the noodle flat so that it looks more like a sword, attach a crossguard and a wheel pommel made from a cross-section cut from the noodle, and aleather wrap if I'm feeling ambitous. I had a 15 year old kid refuse to fi...

The Indian armour invasion kicks it up a notch

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1827833535 This isn't some laughable head-bucked made of 16 gauge steel that looks like a Marvin the Martian hat... this looks like a durable, competently built SCA legal helmet, completely made in India. It's indistinguishable from the munitions h...

Not a big deal really. If I hit someone in the helm, and then just put my shield down and thank them for the fight, I am calling their shots for them, which is the exact opposite of what the SCA is all about. If I'm fighting and I land a killing shot, I just continue fighting until my opponent eithe...

-={SCA}=- Taking an arm...

Hey all. Went to a small war last weekend, where I tried something I'd had bouncing around in my head all winter. When I took an opponent's sword arm, I simply asked him to relinquish the use of his shield and continue fighting me with his good hand. 1) If your opponent is fighting with a strapped s...

Splinted arms; back from the dead!

I aquired a pair of beautiful splinted arms a while ago which were badly rusted out from sitting in storage and passing through multiple owners. I cleaned them up last week, and I'm offering them for sale now. They were made for someone 5-10 and 180 lbs, I will post exact measurements tonite. The va...

Aluminum heater for sale

Hi All, I have a curved aluminum heater for sale, dimensions are 22X32, asking $55 with shipping included in that price. I made it from 5052 12 gauge aluminum, it's light, strong, and has a nice curve. Let me know if you are interested.

Yeah, the Gotland/Wisby lamellar is dated 1300's, but many times gets accidently labelled as a Viking armour. There's a guy here who made a stunning repro of that suit out of MILD steel, I'll look around online for a pic.

I would recomment lacing together 15 or 20 plates, then cutting the cord, knotting it, and starting anew. Everytime you drag 8 feet of cord through those holes you fray the cord and shorten it's lifespan. As for the vertical lacings, just for fun, try lacing the top holes so they overlap the second ...

The picture you are referring to is in Tim Newark's 'Celtic Warriors', it's a color painting of Edward Bruce being ambushed by Irish warriors c. 1300. As far as I know, that painting is pretty much imagination; the CoP looks to be more of a non-overlapping brig made of coin-shaped plates. Check your...

You might also get the look you are going for by covering the bars on your helm with a maille drape, creating the illusion of a cap with the sides and face covered in maille, which was very common on the heavy cavalry troops (Kataphract?) in that area at the time.

Awesome, nice to see something besides a sallet or a barbute. That is a very cool helm style, and it is gonna look great with the cuirass and matching arming clothes.

Sweet.

I think it's neat. It would have been more authentic if, instead of riveting the plates inside of a frame, you overlapped them and riveted them to each other.
