Murdock, I'll bite on that. Plastic thick enough to be effective is lighter than steel, it's been proven a hundred times. I have plastic legs that are the same size and same style as my old steel legs, and weigh 1/3 as much. As for cost, A segmented breastplate is plastic from Dalewyn costs $70, in ...

Thanks Robert, I've been looking at that sword, and the practical Viking sword, for a couple months now. I was thinking I would have to re-wrap the hilts though, are the hilts actual leather? Thanks greatly for the review.

Numerous comanies offer completed flails for sale, but I've never seen the pieces offered individually. If you didn't have your heart set on the spikes, lots of folks could supply you with a simple iron ball with a loop for attaching a chain.

I've heard good things about gun oil, just spraying it onto a cloth and wiping down your armour after use.

You mean these? http://www.bokalosarmoury.com/full%20page%20pictures/GA032.htm I've seen these, though very rarely. Hideous, I'd much rather use a properly dished/curved set. Sorry about the yokels, make your gaunts and offer them for sale, I'm sure you'll find someone with an interest in decent gear.

How to hang a scabbard

I remember a long while ago somebody posting a jpeg of a bunch of different line drawings depicting correct ways to hang a sword scabbard over the centuries, based on effigies, illuminations, surviving examples, etc. Anyone know if this is still online? Thanks.

I would recommend that you use a body armour that has a bit of flex, so that you can call your blows a bit better (lamellar, scale, coat of plates, brig, etc). I've noticed that people who use a single elbow cop with a vambrace often throw shots faster and last longer than people with three or five ...

I have the Mandrake rubber axehead, and it is great, weight is reasonable, it's tough as hell, and looks very realistic compared to a Rathbone or some of the homemade designs you see out there. Sword fittings are next on my list.

Make a full camail covering the bars, sides, and back of your helm. Fight in it this summer, and base your decision off the condition of the mail by October.

$350 gets you the helm, the bargrill, the houndskull visor, and a WELDED Master Knut aventail. Out of my price range, but a good price for what you get (Anshelm sells those aventails alone for $300).

I like it, it reminds me of something that a D&D monster would wear. Very shocked by the weight in comparison to the size of the rings, from the lics I thought the shirt would only weigh about 10 pounds.

Um, the more rivets you use in the construction of the helm, the more impressive it looks. It's against SCA rules to use brass rivets in a helm, but using hundreds of brass-plated steel rivets would be great. Perhaps if you used a small hammer to add a 'dimple' texture to the plates between the span...

I think that SCA axe and mace techniques are much more realistic than sword techniques, with two basic flaws; with the rubber heads you get the right weight, but the bounce-back causes the weapon to gain speed with every blow as you do combination shots, which wouldn't really happen. Go to a foam or...

If I recall, it was used for the cuffs; the fingers, thumb and metacarpel were all steel, then the cuff was fabric or leather with sections of whalebone underneath, like a brig. I could be wrong though.
