I got a pair of $16 Aviation snips for Xmas, and am blown away by what a great tool these are for cutting thick leather. The exacto knife works, but I find you have to go over to cut three or four times before you're all the way through the hide. This sometimes results in these strange extra cuts al...

Thorolf Skalalgrimsson's Halberd is described quite clearly in Egil's Saga as a spear, two ells long, with four edges. I haven't read it in Icelandic/Old Norse (like I could), so I can't vouch for what is said in the original translation. I personally interpret 'four edges' to mean the spear was dia...

Alchemy Armoury- Review
Well, I received one awesome set of Alchemy Armoury legs in the mail today. Played with them a bit, and thought I would post a quick review. They are really well made, Dale uses forms instead of just bending the plastic with his hands, and it shows in the even smoothness of the plastic & the perfect...

Oh, there was such a good discussion about this on More Perfectly Period, but the moderator unfortunately had to tear it down. I'll see if he saved a backup copy; if not, I'll post what I can remember about the discussion.

Egfroth, aren't the checker-patterned coats worn by some soldiers in the Bayeux Tapestry thought to be a quilted armour? http://www.hastings1066.com/bayeux21.shtml The horsemen on the right are wearing garments shaped like hauberks, but with different patterning, no bibs, and without accompanying he...

Stephen, could I recommend you order a couple pounds of rings from a supplier and just weave in a pair of strips to make the maille fit? It's a great price to let it slip away, and the rings would only cost you about $12. Check www.theringlord.com I've bought loose rings & imported riveted maille fr...

http://www.antir.sca.org/WhosWho/p003.htm This guy's sword looks to be made of fairly thick shaved down rattan. I have used 1.5" rattan for all my swords, shaved to 1.25" on the sides. The only exception to this was a bat I made about six months ago from 2" stuff, shaved to 1.25" on the sides. Adds...

Ugo's work is so distinctive & beautiful, but I've always wondered about a signature detail of his. In almost all his breastplates, he seems to put in the middle of the chest this little thing that looks like stitches. I'm guessing it's supposed to be pectoral muscles, but it looks strange. A signat...

Egfroth, here's the page with all the various info: The Armour Library Halvgrim, I don't have my books here (they're at my parent's house). The German lamellar finds were called the Niederstotzingen dig and the Krefeld Gellup dig. The non-German (but still Germanic) digs, I have no clue. That should...

I have written the first 35 or so years of my persona's life, and play as if I am in the year corresponding to my actual age. Right now I am 22 years old; my persona was born in 782, which means that in my head I'm portraying the year 804. My portrayal is of a year-round professional carl in service...

Lamellar would also be a viable option. There are two archaeological finds of lamellar armour dated to the Migration era from Germany, and two more that, while not in Germany, are attributed to Germanic tribes which would have exchanged soldiers and goods with tribes living in Germany. Master Geoffr...

I made a breast & back that articulates on leathers, I'll take a pic & post it tomorrow. I wanted it for under maille, but it turned out too bulky. Would be good if you were just putting it under a tunic. THe next thing I make for use hidden under a maille shirt will be a modified Char Ai Na , like ...

I think you should put a 1300's & 1400's timeframe on it as well. If you are allowing Romans, Normans or Norsemen into the lists, under the condition that they wear a greater burden than their persona would have, it's senseless. Also, I think you would get a much more pleasing aesthetic if everyone'...
