Aren't there Scandinavian artworks from the 11th century depicting flat-topped shields? My reference stuff is at my parent's house, I'd have to check there.

Thanks everyone. There's a guy starting a Roman war unit up here, sounds like he's going pretty strict on the authenticity too, which is cool. Check it out. I've got a lamellar corselet, and was thinking I could play with them on the side without having to change much of my regular kit (read: shell ...

Also, at about the middle of the page, there's a pair of gauntlets with extremely long cuffs, that almost look to be bazubands. AM I imagining things, or is the top of those gaunts dished to accomodate your elbow?

I got in, keep trying, it's about 100 photos of museum armour, 1300's-1600's, and a little 20th century. There is a Maximillian suit etched with obscene hand gestures which I'm sure Vitus would kill me for wearing today Image

Use of Lamellar among the Roman Legions?

When did it start? I'm under the impression that by 300-400 it was fairly common, but would it be appropriate for say 100 AD? JUst curious, thanks.

Tim, did you ever consider those latex swords that those European LARP groups use? Do a google search for latex sword, and it'll turn up all the suppliers. I'm pretty sure they could do a convincing sabre for about $75 a pop.

An a Crown Tourney in An Tir in '97, I saw a fighter in a maille shirt, one of those wide Late Roman/Germanic military belts, and a full-faced Sutton Hoo helm. Unfortunately his leg armour was visible (leather splinted cuisses & steel knees), but it was an excellent effort. There's a local fighter (...

OK, I'm bumping this thread because I just finished building a six-footer which I plan on using with a shield at wars this summer. I've played with it a bit, and was just wondering of anyone had anything else to add. It's difficult so far, but I can see myself really growing to love it.

The shields found in graves & boat burials from the viking age were spruce, fir, and pine. There were some shields found in Birka graves, but I haven't seen the wood type published. The Hjortspring shields were all made of lime wood, as Bascot mentioned, but these are early iron age, much earlier th...

The difference in shipping charges would be very small if I were to order one or three, right? Having shields mailed is expensive, but I imagine piling three of these on top of each other would affect the cost by only a few dollars?

I'll try and drum up some interest & let you know.

I traded some fencing gear with Bob Hurley for an Anshelm set. From what little fighting I did with them, I found them clunky & heavy. It's the first rattan sword I've ever used with a cross guard though, I'm sure I'd get used to it with practice. I started mounting them on a 48" stick, should make ...
