Thanks everyone. There's a guy starting a Roman war unit up here, sounds like he's going pretty strict on the authenticity too, which is cool. Check it out. I've got a lamellar corselet, and was thinking I could play with them on the side without having to change much of my regular kit (read: shell ...

Use of Lamellar among the Roman Legions?
When did it start? I'm under the impression that by 300-400 it was fairly common, but would it be appropriate for say 100 AD? JUst curious, thanks.

An a Crown Tourney in An Tir in '97, I saw a fighter in a maille shirt, one of those wide Late Roman/Germanic military belts, and a full-faced Sutton Hoo helm. Unfortunately his leg armour was visible (leather splinted cuisses & steel knees), but it was an excellent effort. There's a local fighter (...

I started a discussion on it here. From the clear description in Egil's Saga, there is no way it could be any sort of axe. Slashing spear gets my vote.

The shields found in graves & boat burials from the viking age were spruce, fir, and pine. There were some shields found in Birka graves, but I haven't seen the wood type published. The Hjortspring shields were all made of lime wood, as Bascot mentioned, but these are early iron age, much earlier th...

Tall B, Cariadoc's tombstone, or Norman's tombstone, in whatever aluminum the last batch was run from. I don't remember what alloy was used, but my lamellar is made from those plates; light strong, and springy; perfect for this kind of armour. I don't need many, maybe 150. I just want to make upper ...

Postal code is S6V 5R3 (Canada) I sent out a proposal for a group order on my Barony's e-list. One guy contacted me so far, interested in a 30" round. I'd also be more interested in probably a 28" round than a heater or coffin, are prices the same for custom orders? I bought an aluminum blank from B...

http://www.ironwolfarmouries.com/ The genleman who runs Iron Wolf plays in the local SCA, known as Sir Thorwolf. He uses the fingered gauntlets on his site for SCA fighting. I asked him, and he said that the trick to using finger gaunts was having them create the arch over the fingers, grounded to ...

I traded some fencing gear with Bob Hurley for an Anshelm set. From what little fighting I did with them, I found them clunky & heavy. It's the first rattan sword I've ever used with a cross guard though, I'm sure I'd get used to it with practice. I started mounting them on a 48" stick, should make ...

Wanted- shield boss
Hey all I have a really sweet shield blank I picked up, nice teardrop shape. Problem is that there is an 8" (!) hole cut in the middle for a boss. The location is right, but the size is bigger than average. Would some kind person be willing to make me a boss out of aluminum with an 8" opening, and a...

Looks like Mandrake Armoury is overstocked on those nifty cast aluminum sword fittings, and reduced the prices. If anyone was thinking of picking up a set, now would be a good time.
