It's a great sword, but not a Viking sword. Those composite wood and metal hilts are earlier, and I think the twin fullers are earlier too. That would be a perfect sword for a Merovingian Frankish warrior, or a Saxon a couple generations after the invasion. Think about 600 AD. Since I assume you hav...

That is an awesome sword, I have been admiring it for a few months. Well out of my $ range though. What do you think of it? Do you find the shortness to be a hindrance? I've never owned a sword that was less than 36" in length. Nice & light, hmmm? If you put together a kit to match that sword, shoul...

UK Hastings Re-enactment weapon standards
Greetings
Just wondering, did they have the minimum 3 mm. edge thickness rule in effect, or were they allowing thinner blades? What about 2005?
Looking at dropping a little cash on a sword with a 2 mm. edge, and just wondering. I know it's out for Regia Anglorum.

Brennan, your work is awesome. That Birka strap pattern is fantastic. Just wondering, what do you fix the ends of your threads to? I tie one end to my belt, and the other end to a chair, and it works OK, but I have a hard time keeping my tension up. I also find it hurts my back, and is a useless tec...

I really, really like this. It's not armour, but he really captured the 'feel' of the tapestry, and translated it excellently into 3-D. I'd buy it.

Impulse purchase. I've been guilty of it...MANY times. You're cruising around online..."Hmm. That helmet looks awesome. And when I get around to assembling my Seljuk kit, that'll be one less thing to worry about getting." You wake up in the morning, check your email, and realize you have fallen prey...

They are a bit blurry and really damn big, but should give you a better idea of the actual color of the maille (as well as what the individual rings look like).

A LONG time ago, I posted a thread talking about domed wooden shields, and how the hell one would go about making them. You posted you used to do them with a barrel, threaded steel dowel and a nut (I think). Was that you, and would you be interested in doing one again? I'd only need it 3/8"X 30" or ...

Hmm... the Winchester Bible shield is a different pattern, or is it? THanks Michael B, that's exactly what I'm looking for. THe chesspiece I linked to isn't from the Lewis find, it's French, and is known as the Charlemagne Chess Set (even though the clothing and equipment of the figures is obviously a couple hundred years later). I don't know if it's 11th or 12th cen...

I have never tried any curving with glue before. The only thing I've ever done is soak a 1/2 plywood blank in water, suspend it betewen two workhorses, and pile about 60 pounds of sandbags in the middle. Worked OK, but the bend was uneven, and very subtle. ALl my other SCA shields have been flat, or...

My Byzantine Osprey book says that the Byzantine armies switched from the giant oval to the teardrop during the 11th century, in imitation of the Frankish style (Frankish is a term used in the Medieval East to basically mean anything Continental European). It IS an Osprey book though http://www.armo...
