Alternatives to the shield press

Looking to make a curved teardrop/kite out of three layers of 1/8" plywood. I don't really want tp build a full shield press though, since I'll probably only need to make a couple of these in my lifetime (not for SCA). Anyone had any successes with other methods of putting a curve in a board? Weight...

For harnesses, I've made one steel and one aluminum from the Birka plates, one from leather in the 'international' eight hole tombstone style, and two from seven hole 'international' plastic plates from Noble Plastics. I've also closely examined a sixth, made of leather lames by Wulfgar, who posts h...

I like mine laced tight as possible, so tight your harness can stand on it's own. Some folks like it looser. IMO, the looser the lace is, the more individual plates can move during wearing and transportation, and the quicker you are going to fray and strain your lacing material.

A friend of mine has one, and aside from ringing, he loves it. I borrowed it for a few fights, and found the barwork to be distracting. Most armourers put their bars the maximum distance apart (7/8")that is legal, in order to accomodate vision. The illusion bars are much closer together (3/4"?) and ...

I'd recommend Lonely Mountain Forge, he's got a waiting list, but he doesn't piss around... if Joe says 9 months 8 days 4 hours and 45 minutes, that's exactly when you'll get it. Nice stuff too.

Regarding Norse Splint armour, this seems to have fallen out of fashion before the Viking Age proper. It was used in the Byzantine Empire and that area during the time you are referring to, but I highly doubt you'd find it in the British Isles in the 9th-12th centuries.

Have you ever seen the Lewis Chessmen? They are, I think, you're best resource available. Dated to either the 12th or 13th century, Isle of Lewis, of Hiberno-Norse manufacture. No armour, conical one piece helmets with a nasal, and interesting semi-circular cheekplates & backplates. Flat topped or t...

Not mine, but I'd "Buy It Now" if I were looking, aside from the fact that I hate bars attached to the outside of a helm it's quite nice.

Hi Mattmaus, I did read an article by SOFC on olive oil blackening maille, That would probably work well. I don't want a metallic 'blued' color, just a nice dull black. I do realize that I'm a garage putterer and the sword in the pic was blackened by a professional swordsmith, but we'll see how it t...

I went and played with them this past September, and they're a ton o...

dismantling a Paul Chen sword & fire blackening advice

In October I purchased a Paul Chen Practical Viking, with the intent of removing the pommel, slipping off the wood hilt, fabricating an antler one, and replacing the pommel. After having looked over my sword, I realized that I wouldn't be able to make such a modification; I assumed the pommel would ...

Bearded axes are early Viking age, while those long Housecarl-type axes are later. I think, historically, a bearded axe on a five foot pole is unlikely. Good luck with your project though.

They're not advertised on the website, but I've bougt shield blanks and curved boards from Brian Wolfe at events, and they were really top-notch. I'm sure he'd have no problem edging it etc. as well. Drop 'em a line.

In my experience these are pretty ringy, but that's the best helmet you can get that isn't a spuntop for under $100.
