Armourer Review- Halberds (Ron McWilliams)

In November, Ron and I started negotiating a deal to trade a custom maille shirt for a custom spangenhelm. My helm arrived today, and it's so good I thought I'd post a review. Date of Completion - The helm was completed exactly when Ron said it would be, so I would give him 5 out of 5 http://www.arm...

Did you read his article on Scutum construction? 1/4" laminated plywood shields with 20 gauge mixing bowl bosses. I am completely shocked that he is able to get any use out of such lightly-constructed gear.

BTW Evil, if you sniff around Ebay a bit, there is a guy in Winnapeg who runs auctions for these and other cheap-o stainless swords. Not having to deal with customs always brightens my day.

Would those little hand-held aviation snips you can buy work for 18 gauge stainless? I checked out a pair in the store, and was able to cut a dime in half with some effort. A dime must be about 16 gauge?

Dak, it sounds like you had it shipped UPS. In the future, specify that you want items from the US shipped USPS. UPS charges us Canadians a bullshit $45-$50 'brokerage fee' for checking an item through customs.

Yep, he has a spear. I meant that he wears no other weapon, so that the thing on his wrist is his only weapon once spears are foregone. Sorry.

Do these appear often in images from the period?

Help with Old Norse

Trying to create a name for a fictional place. Valley or dale in Old Norse is 'dala', and I'm wondering; if a place were called 'Skjardi's Dale', how would you say it in ON? According to the lineage rules, 'i' becomes 'a', it would be Skjardasdala (ie. Skjardasson, Skjardasdottir). I don't know if i...

The demi gauntlet pattern by 'unknown' in the pattern section works very well in leather, I've made about six pairs. Butt the ends together, and either stitch or hold together with riveted tabs (looks cool).

Interesting too is what I'm interpreting as a blade looped around his wrist; looks like a miniature version of the famous 'Maciejowski Chopper'. The figure wears no sword, axe, or any other weapon.

I think the Gjermundbu shirt is a bad example, since we do have evidence that there was maille attached directly to the helm. [SCA] Hypothetical question; getting around the field once l

Here's the scenario; a field battle with four armies. Your force engages another force, you get legged, then your boys break off to join up with the third force, and your opponents break off to join with the fourth force. This leaves you on your knees a hundred metres from the fighting. Would it be ...

[SCA] Hypothetical question; taking an arm...

You and I are war fighting... you are fighting pike, I have a polearm with a backup sword. You tag me on the right arm, so I drop my polearm, tuck my left arm behind my back, draw my sword in my right hand, and continue to fight. Bad form?
