I used to use straight rawhide, but the marshalls gave me a little grief, saying it OUGHT to be padded. Switched to siloflex hose, which is absolutely weightless, strong, and looks like hell. Built a new shield a few weeks ago, and edged with the siloflex for bulk, then secured wet rawhide over it f...

The sites Albrekt posted are excellent recommendations, great groups with solid authenticity standards, and lots of good articles and eye-candy on their websites. For books, I would recommend a mix of primary and modern stuff. These should be available through inter-library loan, or can be bought us...

Hard to say. If you don't have a measuring tape, call one of the ladies in your SCA group and ask if you can get them to measure you around the chest with a tailor's tape. The guy wearing the bambeson in the pic has a 40" chest, and it fits him like it was made for him. My brother has a 38" chest an...

Can't say as far as historical precedence, but lamellar will still be flexible enough to wear if you alternate your rows between overlap to the left and overlap to the right. I did the chest on my old corselet like this, and was pleasantly surprised by how much stronger it makes your armour. If I ev...

Yep, a brilliant movie, I watch it at least once a month. Goofy, but the final battle scene with the hundreds of extras is great. Memorable scenes are Kirk Douglas running along the oars of the longship, Kirk Douglas hurling throwing axes into the gate of Aella's castle then climing the axe-handles,...

Hi Wulfgar How convinced are you that it's maille, and he's not being portrayed in a quilted under-armour garment. I ask, because a little while ago I was planning on maiking that coif, with a 90° seam around the brow to allow the maille to fall as you see it there. I found a a much more detailed p...

He used to post here under the name Bascot, haven't seen him around much lately. Very nice Viking stuff though. I think Templar Bob and Murdoch are in touch with him frequently, you could try them for contact info. I have been focusing my research on Danish Vikings c. 800 for a while now, and have s...

Give me a break, I was in a pinch to find a model, OK? http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/wink.gif The sleeves will be fitted lengthwise only, this gambeson is ideally meant to be worn short (elbow-length), so that the only arm armour worn over it is the spaulders...

Masters of SCA Combat: Duke Paul of Bellatrix
Anyone know when the actual release date is for this book? I believe it's been bumped three times already, and it's currently listed on Amazon.com as scheduled for release on Dec. 31, 1969 . I've read Duke Paul's essay in the KWH, and skimmed t...

Thanks Aed, not at all a spangenhelm, but it may work for what we're trying to do. What size did you get? IIRC, they only offer two sizes; I bought one of their large sallets about five years ago through Chivalry Sports, and the friggin' thing is huge; definetly inappropriate for someone with a 22" ...

Who bought aluminum shields from me?
Back in April, I ran a sale for, I think 6 aluminum round shields. Warren got one, Galileo got one, and Crystoll got one. I don't remember who bought the other three. ANYWAY, I'm just looking for a status report;how are they holding up? Kinda interested in doing another run, but I may try a diff. al...

I agree with the idea that nothing was worn, if you look at how combat was conducted among Germanic tribes, the sort of attacks you would receive would have been different than in the 1100's. Few axes or maces, mostly small, light swords and spears. Any cavalry would have likely been throwing javeli...

Looking for an affordable spangenhelm...help a new fighter o
After years and years of having deadbeats dome knocking around my garage, I finally met a guy with a real interest in this stuff. He's willing to work, willing to spend a little money, and willing to practice. So, we've got a shield done, and started working on some lamellar. I'd like to find him a ...

There was an interesting experiment happening up here (avacal, An TIr), but I think the Society Marshall put the kibosh on it. Our non-contact archers are a pain in the ass for heavy scenarios, and rapier fighters never get to truly play in a melee scenario. So at the last couple Quad Wars, they too...

I usually buy my rings, as I can get them for less than what it would cost me to buy the wire and wind myself. But when I do wind, I use a wooden dowel in a frame, with a hold drilled in one end, and a handle attached. Loop the wire through the hole, and turn the handle, you should make springs for ...
