Smaller rings are more work but make for more effective and more realistic looking armour. But for a first time taking a shot at a project, bigger rings are a lot easier to work with. I'll second the comment about closing the throat up, my theory is that this was the primary purpose of a coif, to pr...

Looking for a bow

Just curious if anyone has a bow handy? I'm just looking for something for a beginner basically. Wood or fiberglass is OK, thinking ~45#. Not a compound. Not for combat or re-enactment, I just feel like doing some shooting, since i never get outdoors in the winter. Interested in a trade, or possibly...

large/Xlarge gauntlets for sale

http://home.armourarchive.org/members/brodir/galongauntlets.jpg These were made by the elusive David Patton, they're basically the old Andy Ward pattern, but instead of a two piece clamshell, they have a fully articulated mitten. Very nice. THere's nothing wrong with them, they're actually quite ni...

You may have some luck posting it for sale on the discussion forum at www.theringlord.com or placing an ad on www.chainmailstore.com as I'm sure targeting a more maille-oriented customer base couldn't hurt. Good luck.

Hal, that looks soooo good. I've thought about it, and I think we should go with the plain steel nasal. It won't look as flashy as the bronze, but that way there can be no question. I read your other thread with the armourer's stamp (nice!). If possible, I would prefer if you stamped my helm on the ...

I think my favorite archers are those who hunt other archers almost exclusively. I don't think it should be legislated in the SCA to be this way, but I think for the first half of the battle, archers, out of politeness, should focus on gunning down other archers, they join in the cleanup once everyo...

I owned a shirt that was made like this, and hated it. Good maille should bunch up as it hangs, making the weave tighter. Maille hanging vertically is always drawn open to it's fullest expansion, making it less effective. Also, I found that it is much less flexible for side-to-side expansion, meanin...

I would think that Duke Paul Bellatrix shield theory, rotating and punch blocks, would translate best to that style. It'll work, just don't think 'heater'. Never tried it though.

I don't think it's a matter of Chivalry, but simple good sportsmanship. A bunch of heavies are standing around making sure someone is OK, and you shoot one in the head? It's like running a home run while everyone else is in the showers. Yeah, you pulled it off, but who really cares?

Small group skirmish; two sides are fighting on a steep hill, the trail is sandy and full of mole holes etc., each side has four fighters and one archer. Aaron, doesn't your kit weigh 100+ pounds? Without maille? I honestly don't believe that, at that weight, you are authentically re-creating anything but Victorian stereotypes. You are fighting in much heavier armour than a person in the 14th century would have used, and fighting on foot in a cavalry...

ALso, I should mention this is would be a great war kit, where 90% of shots are either a knock on the head, or a thrust to the chest. I would want something a little thicker over the ribs and shoulder blades in a tourney.

Here's an idea; For your legs, I'd wear hockey pants (the ones with the plates that slide in) with a simple one piece knee made of leather or plastic, steel or aluminum may tear the fabric. Wear over these a pair of pants like these; http://www.gotmus.i.se/1engelska/bildstenar/bilder/bild_broa_halla...

There's a place locally that sells those plastic water tanks that sit in the back of a pickup truck, and if yours is damaged (they somethimes fracture if you leave them full of water and let it freeze), they can weld them for you.

What would you pay for a coif?

The guy I buy rings from has some 14 gauge 5/16" rings on sale. They are iron/mild steel. I've had an itch lately to try my hand at making a coif, but it wouldn't really be appropriate for my persona (Denmark/Jutland c. 800), and I can't really afford to just buy the rings for the hell of it. I'm no...

If I were portraying a Highland Scot, I would wither wear a maille shirt, or a thickly-padded knee length garment. There are many accounts of Highlanders fighting in maille shirts, long after they went out of vogue in England or on the Continent. You have to remember, when the simple chain shirt was...
