Jesus, they squired him ;)

A hearty congrats to our own Ewan of Loch Fynn, who was squired to Sir Gunther Rorikson last weekend! I left the event early so I missed the ceremony, and just found out through the Prinicpality e-list.

Sir Gunther is my favorite local knight, and I'm really happy for both of 'em.

Any Vikings out there got $10?

I have been in contact with one Elisabeth Vogt at the University Museum in Oslo, Norway regarding obtaining some closeup pictures of the Gjermundbu maille shirt, really good close up pictures of the rings. She has agreed to email me pics, but the museum charges 150 kroners (about $32 CAD, $20 US) fo...

Instead of riveting that nasal to the front of the helm, you should have attached straps and used it as a shield http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/wink.gif Seriously, looks very good. Very smooth, and the dishing on the browband and frame bands is an important detail that is often overlooked. The fil...

The guy on the right, with the axe and buckler, looks really out of place... his armour looks super home-made next to everyone else. The elbows, knees and spaulders don't look to have been dished at all.

Thanks very much Anders, I'm interested in doing a shirt of alternating punched/riveted rings, it's great to know that it is also the construction used in the Gjermundbu shirt. I've seen the Gjermundbu mail shirt used as evidence for butted maille, but's it's a prety weak argument. Basically, the report states that the rings are overlapped, flattened, but not riveted (or there is no sign of rivets). I imagine the shirt was riveted, and they have just become unidentifyable ...

Isn't it against Ebay rules to run an auction for something you don't have in hand, without specifying in the auction? I did consider your suggestion of making the helm with the inner and outer bands, held with one row of rivets. I think it is quite beautiful, and the d-shaped plates are a nice touch. Is it split in the front? I ask because it looks to be quote long, perhaps mid-thigh. If it isn't split, he may have a hard time fighting in it since it will limit his movement at the waist.
