Clay, do you have the Charles Ffoulkes book, 'The Armourer And His Craft'? I'm going 100% by memory here, but there is a little drawing under the 'leather armour' chapter of an 1100's warrior in a kettle hat, maille hauberk with mittens, chausses, and a sleeveless coat of scales that covers him from...

Thanks for the warning Bob. I'm not really into WMA right now. Last week I started stumbling my way through a little I. 33 with a Viking-style broadsword and a 22" centergripped roundshield I had lying around, but truth be told I feel like I'm spreading myself a little too thin right now. With unive...

I'm glad to see you didn't use that damned goofy 45° sleeve pattern either, straight sleeves are so much more logical. Did Tolkien ever sketch any of the guards of Minas Tirith? I always found the description of their helms as having raven's wings on them was really cheesy, until one night in bed I envisioned them as thus; conical helms with nasals, and a browband similar to the Wenceslaus helm , but instead of the ...

re-enactment-style steel fighting- learning in total isolati

Myself and a friend are wanting to get involved in re-enactment-style steel fighting, but there is nothing like this happening anywhere near here. Not studying historical methods, but the sort of fighting done by groups like Regia Anglorum & such. Sort of a preparation for when (if) we should ever t...

You've got to love early Christianity...

Reading Njal's Saga tonight, I can appreciate the tactics used by the early Scandinavian Christian missionaries when dealing with their Pagan neighbours... "(Thorkell) challenged Thangbrand to a duel; Thangbrand defended himself with a crucifix instead of a shield; but even so he managed to defeat T...

I have a friend named Brent, who I punch in the throat every time he says something stupid. He's not very bright, which adds up to a lot of knocks on the ol' apple in a day. The gorget would help preserve his voice, so that he may share his wisdom for generations to come.

I honestly can't remember, the last time I even looked at it was when you and I were discussing on More Perfectly Period the date when helmets turned conical, that was at least six months ago. I wonder because these helmets look like the sort of weird stuff being worn by those German/Nordic nationalist clubs in the late 1800's/early 1900's. I've seen black & white photos of guys with huge handlebar moustaches, wearing horned and winged and spiked helmets and sheepskin vests, apparently ge...

Egfroth! Help re: Golden Psalter of St. Gallen

I used to have an image saved on my C drive I though I grabbed from your page, it was from the Golden Psalter of St. Gallen, and depicted Frankish warriors wearing very round spangenhelms with nasals. I lost the pic, and I can't find anything on your site from the GP except the proto-morions on the ...

I think the neck guards were probably more for defense from missiles, like the brim on a kettle hat. The wide arcs could just be written of to diffrentiate from the Roman practice of using the sword primarily in a thrusting motion.

I've read a little rule somewhere, but I don't know how true to history it is; Scandinavian seaxes were straight along the cutting edge, and gently sloped down along the back. Saxon seaxes were straight along the cutting edge, and straight along the back, then suddenly angled down in a straight line...
