...if the lamellae at Birka were even Viking in origin. A trade town, on the easternmost tip of Sweden, it's probable the plates are of Steppes or Byzantine origin. Who knows if they even made it to Birka as an armour? If I recall there were only six or seven plates found (or perhaps it was six or s...

Glad you loke the ploeaxe, I've been looking for a reason to buy one myself. Not at all correct for what i'm trying to portray (Denmark/Jutland c. 800), but would be a helluva lot of fun to own. A burgeonet is that peaked helm you were referring to. Don't limit yourself to the one style in the Albre...

It looks really good, I'm impressed. I think the yellow is a bit bright, I was under the impression that saffron dye came out a deeper color, almost like an orange/yellow. I could be easily wrong though. I may add short sleeves to the maille. These are only suggestions, I'm certainly not bashing you...

Overall, the kit looks good. I'll chime in that the helm appears too big, you'll do well to look for something a little smaller. After years of having my already-big head float around in helms that were too big for me, I finally got a helm in August that has JUST eough room for padding. It's great, ...

http://home6.swipnet.se/~w64205/bilder/jhfh1c.jpg All I know of is that picture, if there is more stuff online that would be great. What's the speculated date for that hat? I've also seen a couple fights locally which, while not period, have a more period 'feel' to them. Two guys stand amost nose-to-nose, with their left feet braced against each other. At the call of 'Lay On', they basically start throwing everything they have. Rather than acting out injuries or taking...

There are tournaments here which are growing more and more popular... the stopwatch is set on an hour, and you go out and fight as many fights as you can in that time. If you win a fight, you prowl the field for another victim, if you lose you salute your worthy opponent and give his name to a perso...

http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001458.html OK, this thread really got me thinking. #1, I don't pad the sides or back of my helmets, none of them. I wear a high Master Geoffrey gorget, and my helmet connects with my gorget before it hits my head on every blow I have received thus far. ...

I'm about to start fighting with one again, cause I love them. There are two images I know of that imply the use of the oval shield in the 'Dark Ages' or whatever you'd like to call it. Oseberg Tapestry , circa. 834, and the Bayeux Tapestry , circa. 1070. Both of these shields are not true ovals as ...

There's a pattern floating around the 'net for making a char-ai-na out of a stopsign, with practically no waste. Not authentic material though, and i'm 90% sure it's not really an authentic pattern. I'll look for it if you want Alexi, but judging from your previous posts you're probably looking for ...

Probably centergripped oval, about 22X32... not a true oval, but like a rectangle with rounded ends (a la the Oseberg tapestry or the Bayeux Tapestry). I wish I could document this shield shape to Denmark c. 800, cause I love it. Comes very naturally to me. Second would be a centergripped round. Thi...

The Scottish Target
I'm wondering what the earliest evidence is for target-type shields being used in Scotland. So we're all on the same page, by target I mean a round shield, 18"-24" in diameter, which has a forearm strap and a hand strap. This is for a friend.

Good idea, I was planning on doing the same thing. I have one of those Paul Chen Practical Viking swords coming in the mail, to make it more authentic & unique looking I'm going to: Cover the scabbard in linen, and fix a permanent leather belt to it. Disassemble the entire sword. Pull off the leathe...

I went and fought with a boffer group a few weekends ago, and I really liked how they scored their fighting. There was no taking limbs, a hit scored finished the fight. No hitting below the elbows, or below the knees. Unarmoured, leather armour or padded garments gave no armour bonus. Flexible steel...
