Re: Spring stainless vambrace splints
I'm sorry I misunderstood your message, Russ. The two longer splints in each arm are 17.4cm long. Hopefully that works for your needs. I'll PM you paypal info and we can get you squared away.

I have 3 sets in my van that could be in the mail to you today.
These are stiff and tough as heck, but lighter than other splints you can buy.

These could certainly reinforce leather bazubands. They're intended to be riveted to leather in a setup like this gent wears: http://effigiesandbrasses.com/monuments ... /original/

Re: Who works with hardenable stainless steels or similar?
What grade of stainless are you playing with Randall? The specs for 410 say you get the highest corrosion (rust?) resistance after heat treating and polishing. I've managed to get it to rust by sweating on my arm harness in a ravine in Mississippi and leaving it out in the dirt over night. Dew forme...

You might use submission or capture, pushing someone out of the ring. Either encourages a lot more damage and wrestling than we presently see. I'd rather get knocked down than knocked out, or tear a rotator cuff.

Re: Battle of the Nations 2013
Maces are legal, and the pole arms can weigh a couple pounds. They do hit pretty hard, and you can stun an opponent. There were a number of concussions in Warsaw last spring. Shields hit harder than most of us expected. Swords don't behave like light sabers, and armour generally protects you pretty ...

Re: Who works with hardenable stainless steels or similar?
I work in spring stainless. There are a few different alloys that qualify, though some of them may have too much of a chrome hue to satisfy the reenactment crowd, depending on how picky they are. I also do a lot of the heat treating for North Star Armoury, so if I can't fit your friend's commission ...

Yes, they're shaped and fired, and Master Jovian is coming over tonight to sand and polish them tonight. They're shaped to give you the outline of a real calf, so the side splints are a shallow S curve, and the front plates are flared at the ankle. All of them have a lengthwise curve to add strength...

Weird. The description on Amazon says it's copper. My understanding of the alloy fits with what Sean described. I'm curious what the guys making helmets are doing to weld the pieces together. Seems like that would make a soft spot along the seams that got heated unless you plannish the heck out of t...

Spring stainless vambrace splints
We've made another batch of vambrace splints. 6 sets are polished up and available for $95 including shipping to the continental US. Shipping to Canada is $5 more. I'll have to look up the prices for other destinations. Here are the details: http://burgundianhours.blogspot.com/2012/10/18-gauge-splin...

Re: Use of a Two handed axe.
Hi Augusto. I tend to keep my fingers fairly close together because: 1. They get hurt more easily when they spread. 2. They don't fit in my gauntlets when they are spread. Honestly I focus very little on my fingers during axe play. It's mostly about range, leverage, and scaring your opponent. Have y...

Re: BOTN helm thickness ?
There's always going to be some risk of concussion. Not feeling the hits in this game so you can focus on your opponent with minimal distraction would be glorious. I'd give a lot of thought to the total helm design. Mass, and how easily the helmet deforms are clearly important. The worst concussions...

Re: Fixing a ACL pole axe
I used rattan for my axe hafts in Poland, as did most of the team. It doesn't hit quite as hard, but it also doesn't break as easily. It's very satisfying to hit someone with an axe, but it's more common to take out opponents with checks and trips, which you can only do if you have an intact weapon....

Re: BOTN helm thickness ?
I'm using 0.090 spring for the skull. Bevors and reinforcement plates can be thinner, but I feel that is the right amount of mass. 14ga may work OK for some folks, but IMO it's a bit too light to resist all the brain injury and dents, and 12ga is heavy enough that it raises your center of gravity to...

Tempering allows you to at least partially decouple the hard-brittle connection Scott rightly warns about. Check this little graph and blurb out: http://burgundianhours.blogspot.com/2012/01/toughness-and-hardness.html?m=1 Your thickness depends on your application and your skill. Working really thin...

Re: Why don't Squires exist?
Just like in medieval Europe, ranks, titles and honorifics have different meanings in different areas today. In the East, particularly in Jersey, there are tons of knights, so a squire isn't unusual or particularly special. Where there aren't so many, or the squire is the best connected person they ...

Re: Why don't Squires exist?
In Maurice Keen's book, "Chivalry," he refers multiple times to squires being a rank. They were the lowest rung on the ladder of nobility. An archer in a knight's retinue was most likely not of noble birth, but a squire most likely was.

I wrote 90 because that's the temperature at which NYC carriage horses can't work. (Rule #1 for trying to get anything done in the USA: Think like a...
