Re: How Should A Bannerer Behave in Battle?

I'm happy to see a banner bearer in the front ranks on occasion, and fighting with the banner. It depends on the style of the commander and his unit's ability to hear and follow his commands. If it's noisy or chaotic it may be most effective to just follow the flag.

Low profile thrusts on 2 handers

The heavy combat marshal's handbook is still saying 2 handed thrusting tips need to be 2 inches across. This guy here: m Section VII C 5. But the addendum here days they can be an inch and a quarter: m Can we update the main rule book so folks won't have to hunt for the official rule, find what look...

You'd have to have lightning fast hands to draw a secondary in a reasonable amount of time. If your persona would have carried one, or you want to be covered in case you're totally disarmed, by all means to so, but I wouldn't rely on a backup weapon against a fast opponent.

Re: How to tell if its Stainless ?

<psst- Sean- he already tried the magnet. It stuck hard.> The spark test will help but even that is subjective. It's probably the most fun way, but it takes some expertise to figure out what you're really seeing. Hydrochloric acid can make stainless rust if you give it enough time, and it forms bond...

Re: What spring steel do I want for armour?

If you temper it right 4130 would make a decent knife blade. It's tough and will hold an edge pretty well. You might prefer 4140 since it can get a bit harder, but it depends on what your knife will be used for. Cutco makes high end kitchen knives out of 410. They stay sharp very well, they're flexi...

For me it's mostly about the people I'm with. Running around at a Southern Region War Camp in the East back in '94 or so with my squire brothers and the knights in ICOD was awesome. Pennsic with that same crew. Gulf Wars with my squire or my cousin have been great.

Re: Layering your 14th century armour...

It seems redundant to me to be wearing two padded layers. You'd look, and probably feel, like a little kid wearing three sweaters under his snow suit. You wouldn't be able to put your arms down. So with a padded jupon I'd consider wearing a shirt, an aketon (by which I mean an unpadded, but probably...

JP- I reckon Aaron's only 5'8". 170lbs might be right for him, but he could easily be lighter. By his own account, Kein is 248.5 right now, though he was probably 40lbs lighter when he won his last crown.

Duke Gryffith should be in this range. I'd guess he's about 5'11" and about 190.

If you're looking for what was typical for England and Burgundy at that time, you're not missing a category. It's steel, or just hosen. I wouldn't be stunned if you find some gamboised cuisses around then, but they're not commonly depicted. It makes some sense because they don't fare well against th...

Re: opening shots

Drake's advice which Cathal repeated makes more sense in Ansteorra than it might in other locales. Tourney shields are bigger here, so legs are generally lower probability shots, and against a good opponent they require some set up. Drake is very, very quick. The simplicity of his decision tree cont...

Re: The poleaxe, armour and SCA. Looking for guidence.

It depends on what level of maintenance you're willing to do. Spring steel isn't impervious to denting, and the leather backing is like putting it on a shot bag. Guys wailing on your arms will turn 0.025 into a taco. Your arm will survive the thrashing OK, but you'll have to pop the splints off and ...

There is a rail line that runs right through the valley. It's quite a hike from any rail stop to the castle though, and it's rural enough you'll have trouble finding a taxi. There are dozens of small castles and wineries in the area that you can visit by car. I felt the flexibility of a rental car w...

Re: Polearms fighters: How do YOU set up your best shots?

Most of the fight is determined by your control of the range of the fight and getting inside your opponent's head. It's worth while to spend some time in extremely close quarters with your foe while he's completely unable to hit you. He'll be less eager to charge in.
