Re: To dish or to raise, that is the question ;)

Do what gets you the results you want quickly. Judging the worthiness of a technique in any other way is goofy. You can thin or thicken metal by dishing or by raising depending on how you hit it, but if you're stretching it such that the final length, like the measurement over the outside of a knee ...

Re: Hand punch for all round use?

Doing 10g is likely to break your punch- not the body of it, but the punch itself doesn't align properly. You won't get great leverage for it with the #5Jr. A #8 will handle 10g though. I have three #5 Jrs. hanging over my bench and I use them all the time. They're a great investment if you do much ...

I don't get why so many people are bent out of shape because this kid wants to do something that won't be all that effective. He's not yet artful in his approach, but questioning the rules and expanding what we can do is a good thing. I don't think anyone wants to see injury rates spike up, so it sh...

Some great ransoms I've gotten (all from The Deed): Good fabric, books, glass beads, honey, pewter belt mounts, pewter buttons, and coins. They're all memorable, and make the fight more special. My wife used the buttons on the cotehardie I was laurelled in. It's fun to get to tell people where the c...

I think there are a few reasons pro athletes wear cleats. They do give you better traction. When your multi-million $ salary depends on your every step, a slip is embarrassing. They train and build up their muscles and tendons so they can handle the strain most of the time. I don't have any data on ...

Re: Rondel stilettos

I don't see a particularly rigid nomenclature for medieval weapons. The way I see it- rondel describes the guard, and stiletto describes the "blade" which here is mostly just a long tapered point, with no real edge. It's all stab and and no slash. I mean, you could rap on someone's knuckle...

Re: Footwear and knee braces

It's pretty tough to roll your ankle if you're bare foot. A thicker sole lengthens the lever arm that damages your ankle, so I keep that lever as short as I practically can. Cleats are working for Uric, though his body may be well adapted to them through conditioning, strength, and how he moves. I t...

Cleats sound like a great way to let you put a lot of torque on your ankles and knees to me. The only serious ankle injury I've ever gotten was from playing football in cleats. It might have happened in other shoes, so it's hard to tell. I fight in turn shoes or some approximation of them when I can...

Re: Armed to the teeth (SCA).

I sometimes stash a back up weapon on the field- usually up against a tree or a castle wall so I don't have to bend down to grab it. If I'm being chased I don't want to get stabbed in the taint. But I don't generally carry back up weapons. Every one of my opponents has a weapon that I'm quite happy ...

Re: Opinions on a Strapped Shield hand being used....

The language is a bit loaded. "Grappling" is expressly forbidden. Grabbing someone's cross hilt or haft is allowed, at least in melee. I don't think it's cheating to use an armoured shield hand to grab stuff, but by the way I understand the rules, once you're using that hand for something ...

Yeah, by my count there were about 25 combatants this year. If fight in a pigface sometimes. I think I did last year. It's substantially harder to do in most pig designs, since the cone obscures a lot of your opponents' feet, and the line of the occular tends to be pulled out away from your eyes. Th...

Konstantin is right, the Churburg #13 does have a full buff leather lining, but it's not necessary for a functional version. Strips work fine. You'll see many versions of it which extend well past the ribs in front, which wasn't how the original worked. It's not a big deal to make the side plates a ...

They do a hunt in the West with rules a lot like Alex describes. The Deed and the Combat of the 30 are run with a different rule set. It's more or less armour as worn. Those are a TON of fun. So it doesn't have to be stretching your imagination to far to be different and fun.

I was the Ansteorran general this year, and this is my perspective on the victory condition changes.
