Re: Gulf Wars XX Photos
The rules read that archers can fire from the ramps, and they're vulnerable to other archers and siege artillery. There was no mention in the rules that it would change mid battle. I get that it would seem pretty tough from the defender's perspective since it would feel like they can't do much about...

Re: Effigy date problem?
The collar, the sabatons, the gauntlets, and the buttons all look like they're from the 1390s to me. The buttons look a LOT like the ones I wear, which are based on a well documented piece from that decade.

Murdock- You're still hell on wheels. Outnumbered like that you still managed to stab me in the armpit with a dagger. Made me glad I wore a stout maile shirt.

An effigy from Belgium circa 1380: m The upper part of the spaulder is covered, but it gives us some clues. There are a couple interesting shoulder harnesses here: m The one from Holland is quite unusual. I'm not sure if the brass of the van Heers brothers is trying to show us a domed shoulder cop o...

What kind of helm are you making? I ask because spangen helms and salets used rivets that looked different. I'm not going to say these are universal or perfect, but they'll get the job done well and cheaply:

I don't know what alloy Brian used here. My experience is that 4130 and 410 temper effectively below 500 degrees given a sufficient soak time. This doesn't line up with the temp numbers I've seen Sean post, which may be based on 1050. I agree with Mike that this failure looks like the gauntlets were...

Re: And my turn
Greg, your assertion that Brian never accepts fault isn't accurate: I have always said that chivalry is not a matter of acting with perfection (although I wish I were better at it), but is rather a question of making suitable amends after a wrong has occurred. Some of the things that happened in the...

Someone here described a crazy melee event in Finland that I'd love to go to. It's way up north around the arctic circle, and insanely cold, even by Finish standards. Half of the event is spent fighting and the other half in the sauna. And I've been to most of the big events in the US except Lilies,...

I happened to move from California to Texas around the same time Brian did. It was quite possible at the time to pocket a couple hundred grand on the difference in the house prices and still have a big house in Texas. I know many who did. Real estate is relatively cheap in most parts of this state a...

Put yourself in Brian's shoes for a moment, Louis. Imagine losing great friends like Doug Strong, Greg Mele and Christian Tobler because of things you did. I read their stuff and buy their books not just because I learn things from them, but because they're rock stars around here. Imagine losing you...

Yeah, I do it all the time. Most blacksmiths make their first tongs by heating one end of a rod, grabbing the other end with a (maybe gloved) hand, and shaping the hot bits. Take a little care because that heat will eventually travel up the steel. You can quench the parts you're going to hold period...

The backing (leather?) material will match the full pattern we see, but the splints won't extend into that eye shaped bit at the bottom right? I'd expect that part to go into the couter, but if the splints do they'll be pretty bulky and redundant. I'd give some thought to weight. What are your splin...

Hrolfr- I feel they're fundamentally different. Madoff created a pyramid scheme whose intent from the beginning was simply to make himself a ton of money at the expense of others. I think with Brian he started out with the best of intentions. He wanted to share some great historical work and armour ...

Cutting fiberglass for bolts (SCA)
A friend of mine has a stack of arrow length shafts she wants trimmed down to use in her crossbow. I've never cut fiberglass before so I have some questions. 1. I have a well equipped shop, but what's the best way to cut them? 2. What do I need to do to do this safely? I'd like to not have tiny glas...

Cool vids, JP! I use a big plastic garbage can for my quench tub, but I also quench in water. So the edges are farther away, and if I melt through the sides it's a flood instead of an inferno. Thomas has a point though. You might want to preheat the tongs, since you're cooling the metal they grab pr...

Fighting in the West where Brian lived for many years I've had 16ga legs torn up completely. So maybe something thicker isn't so wrong? That said, yes there are a lot of typos in the book.
